To evaluate tibia1 ultrasound velocity in women with premature ovarian failure (POF) before hormone replacement therapy, a study of bone fragility of control cases and POF patients was performed in Reproductive endocrinologic clinic of a tertiary hospital. Ten women with POF (age ranged from 2 1 to 38), and 15 normal healthy women were studied. Those patients were assessed for the cortical bone status of the tibia by Soundscan 2000 (Myriad Ultrasound Systems Ltd., Israel). Ultrasound velocity of tibia in POF patients ranged from 3775.6 mkec to 4099.9 m/set (mean&SD; 3959 & 104 m/set). The mean ultrasound velocity was higher in the healthy normal group (3997 + 73 rnkec) than in POF women. Bone loss is a potentially debilitating condition in women with premature ovarina failure which results in hypoestrogenemia. Thus, a lowered ultrasound velocity propagation and reduced mineral content of the osseous tissue in the tibia1 cortical bone can be expected. However, there was no significant difference between POF patients and the normal controls found in our study. The results may suggest that there could be other mechanisms which maintain bone mass in POF patients in spite of low ovarian function.
