Patent No US 7,405,191 B2, covering a fabric-care article made of a solid or semi-solid matrix of materials suitable for repetitive or multiple use in a tumble dryer, has been obtained by Unilever. The matrix is prepared from a mixture containing 0.5% to about 20% by weight of a polymeric structuring agent, up to about 25% of an anionic soap surfactant, about 10% to 60% of free fatty acid, and about 1% to about 50% of a nonionic material. It is substantially free from cationic surfactant. The mixture is cast in a mould containing a sheet or fibre form of 0.2% to about 10% of a nonwoven filler structuring agent. When the fabric care article is used up, it simply disappears, indicating that it needs to be replaced.
APE-free phosphate surfactants in coating applications A study conducted by experts at Rhodia Polymer System Specialties demonstrated that using a phosphate ester surfactant as a dispersing and wetting agent in a paint formulation can considerably boost the overall paint performance on a coating film gloss, a coating layer’s adhesion and colour acceptance. The company’s Rhodafac APE-free phosphate ester surfactants show potential application as primary anionic emulsifiers in latex formulation and then incorporated into a paint system. The materials can also be used in water-based paint products. Coating systems incorporated with Rhodafac surfactants offer excellent performance in terms of blocking, scrub and water resistance. Packaged detergent Reckitt Benckiser has been awarded Patent No US 7,407,923 B2 for a packaged detergent composition for use in automatic dishwashing or laundry washing machines. It includes a container that at least partly breaks up in an aqueous environment. The container also has a compartment. Two fluid phases and a solid comprise the detergent composition. The solid is substantially insoluble in the fluid phases and large enough to be retained by a 2.5 mm mesh. The solid has a density intermediate between those of the two fluid phases and floats at an interface between them. HAPPI, Household & Personal Products Industry, Sep 2008, 45 (9), 32
ENVIRONMENT Cefic Responsible Care Annual Report 2006-2007: nitrogen and phosphorus emissions to water The release of nitrogen and phosphorus into water has the potential to result in eutrophication. Chemicals are a major source of these emissions. In the matched samples of 18 countries nitrogen emissions to water are down by 16% and phosphorus emissions are down by about 24% over the period 2003-2006. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is the potential of chemical emissions to water to remove dissolved oxygen that would otherwise support fish and other aquatic life. In the matched samples from 18 countries there has been a reduction in COD of about 25% over 2003-2006. MARKET REVIEWS Cosmetics, toiletries and detergents continue strong growth in Finland Finland’s cosmetics, toiletries and detergents sector registered further strong growth in 2007, with total sales growing more than 4% to reach €605 M. Total sales were bolstered primarily by the cosmetics and toiletries sector, which had sales of €410 M, up nearly 5%. However, growth in the cosmetics and toiletries sector appears to have begun weakening, since beauty products consumption is influenced by the economic situation in Finland. Sales of consumer washing, cleaning and maintenance products grew just 2% in 2007, indicating that the market has reached maturity. Institutional and industrial washing and cleaning products also achieved 2% growth in 2007. Products made domestically contributed 19% to total sales, with washing and cleaning products accounting for nearly 12%, cosmetics and toiletries about 50%, and institutional and industrial products 32%.
