Environmentally sound metalsplating process developed S t a i n l e s s D e s i g n C o r p o r a t i o n (SDC) of S a u g e r t i e s , USA a n d the New York State E n e r g y R e s e a r c h a n d D e v e l o p m e n t A u t h o r i t y (NYSERDA) have i n i t i a t e d a project to develop a n d d e m o n s t r a t e a closed-loop h y b r i d m e m b r a n e recovery s y s t e m for New York's metals-plating Industry. The m e m b r a n e s y s t e m c o u l d save the industry, a s u b s t a n t i a l a m o u n t of m o n e y while r e d u c i n g the a m o u n t of c h e m i c a l w a s t e a n d w a s t e w a t e r g e n e r a t e d at m e t a l s - p l a l i n g facilities. NYSERDA SDC a n d R e n s s e l a e r Polytechnic I n s t i t u t e are c o n s i d e r i n g a h y b r i d m e m b r a n e recovery s y s t e m to filter c h e m i c a l w a s t e s from b a t h s a n d r i n s e w a t e r s u s e d i n electroless n i c k e l p l a t i n g a n d c y a n i d e - b e a r i n g plating. The closed-loop m e m b r a n e s y s l e m will e l i m i n a t e the d i s p o s a l of wastewater, sludge a n d o t h e r h a z a r d o u s w a s t e s b y recycling r i n s e w a t e r s a n d electroless n i c k e l a n d c y a n i d e p l a t i n g b a t h s . It is h o p e d t h a t the project will r e s u l t in a p r o d u c t t h a t will be m a n u f a c t u r e d b y SDC a n d u s e d b y lhe a p p r o x i m a t e l y 3 0 0 0 m e t a l s - p l a t i n g job s h o p s t h r o u g h o u t New York State. SDC's G a r y Dyal s a i d t h a t c o m p a r e d with other water s e p a r a t i o n s y s t e m s , m e m b r a n e t e c h n o l o g y h a s a high rate of c a p t u r e a n d is u s e d in other i n d u s t r i e s for hm~dling large a m o u n t s of w a t e r from the w a s t e for r e u s e , b u t it also serves a s a p r o c e s s for the r e - p u r i f i c a t i o n of a v a r i e t y of other w a s t e s t r e a m s . O n c e dew, loped, the m e m b r a n e s y s t e m will be d e m o n s t r a t e d at K e y s t o n e C o r p o r a t i o n of Buffalo, a m e t a l s - f i n i s h i n g c o m p a n y t h a t specializes i n electroless n i c k e l a n d p r e c i o u s m e t a l s plating.

The existing p l a n t - - two s a n d filters c o n t a i n e d i n p r e s s u r e vessels - - t r e a t s 1 O0 m a of w a t e r per d a y from a highly c o l o u r e d r a w w a t e r source. However, t r e a t e d water r e t a i n s a h i g h level of c o l o u r i n g w h i c h m u s t be r e m o v e d if EC directives are to be met. PWT's F y n e p l a n t is s a i d to offier the m o s t a d v a n c e d t e c h n o l o g y c u r r e n t l y available for t r e a t i n g c o l o u r e d w a t e r a n d w a s developed specifically to treat water s u p p l i e d to s m a l l c o m m u n i t i e s s u c h a s T o m n a v o u l i n . It h a s s i g n i f i c a n t Ol~eratlonal a d v a n t a g e s , in the c o n t e x t of r e m o t e locations, with filter c l e a n i n g o p e r a t i n g a u t o m a t i c a l l y , t h r e e to four m o n t h s b e t w e e n e a c h c h e m i c a l c l e a n i n g cycle, a n d t h r e e to four y e a r s b e t w e e n m e m b r a n e r e n e w a l s . Access to the site ls difficult a n d the existing b u i l d i n g is u n s u i t a b l e for the n e w e q u i p m e n t . The p l a n t will therefore be s u p p l i e d to 1the site r e a d y commissioned, in a container, needing only c o n n e c t i o n to the r a w a n d s u p p l y p i p e l i n e s before going online.
