Sir,—We write to correct a mi«lmHing impression arising from a misquotation of our work by Thomas, Fletcher and Hill (1982) in which they state "it has been shown that nitrous oxide is antagonized by naloxone." In fact, although we did show this phenomenon, it only occurred in a minority of subjects, most having their analgesic response to nitrous oxide enhanced by administration of low doses of naloxone (GUlman, Kok and Lichtigfeld, 1980). From thesefinHing«we have postulated a dual system encompassing both pain and pleasure (Gillman, Kimmel and Lichtigfeld, 1981; GUlman and Lichtigfeld, 1982).
