In Brief Sealing Solutions achieves Parker certification In the USA, Sealing Solutions Inc, an authorized distributor of Parker Hannifin’s sealing products, has been certified as a Parker Sealing Technology Center (STC). The STC certification, which was awarded following a stringent qualification process, means that the company is equipped to offer its customers technical assistance, sales support and access to Parker’s full line of engineered sealing systems and products. Parker says that it introduced its STC programme towards the end of 2001 in response to customer demand for a higher level of local engineering and applications expertise. To qualify for STC status, distributors are required to have an in-house full-time sealing specialist as well as electronic transaction capabilities. NN postpones offering NN Inc of Johnson City, Tennessee, USA, has announced that because of unfavourable market conditions, it is postponing the proposed follow-on public offering of its common stock. The proposed offering of 6 500 000 shares of its common stock included 2 600 000 shares to be offered by the company and 3 900 000 shares to be offered by several selling stockholders. The company, which manufacturers and supplies precision bearing components, comprising balls, rollers, seals and retainers posted sales of US$180 million in 2001. Sovereign Specialty Chemicals names new CEO US company Sovereign Specialty Chemicals Inc has announced that Norman Wells Jr has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company. Robert Covalt will continue in his position as Chairman of the Board of Sovereign. Both Wells and Covalt will continue as directors of the company. Wells has served on Sovereign’s board of directors since 1999.

MetalSkin seals well perforations In the USA, Weatherford International Ltd of Houston, Texas, has announced that its MetalSkin expandable casing repair system has been deployed for the first time — in an 18-cm (7-inch) water injection well in California. Approximately 76 m (250 ft) of 14-cm (5.5-inch) solid expandable tubing was deployed and expanded at a depth of over 1600 m (5300 ft), and used to shut-off several existing perforations that were no longer required. The condition of the casing, documented by a casing caliper log made before the installation, included serious corrosion and significant loss of casing wall thickness, making this installation a significant test for such a new expandable tubular technology, says the company. The MetalSkin system features Weatherford’s patented Compliant Rotary Expansion System which enabled the clad to be deployed inside this casing despite the serious corrosion and partial collapse. The expansion system provided a strong seal and maximized the through-bore for future access to the lower exposed perforations. Weatherford says that this successful field deployment of the system illustrates its potential to address numerous, common well

Rohm and Haas Co’s results show that it has had a strong second quarter and it is generating sales growth in key market segments, despite a volatile external environment. The company, which is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, reported second quarter earnings from continuing operations of US$110 million (excluding the impact of non-recurring items), or US$0.49 per share. This represents a 64% increase over pro-forma earnings of US$67 million, or US$0.30 per share, for the corresponding period of 2001 (excluding the impact of nonrecurring items and amortization of goodwill and indefinite-lived intangibles). Sales of US$1457 million — 3% higher than the equivalent period in 2001 — reflect market growth in several business segments, the impact of new products and an improved product mix, says Rohm and Haas. Sales of US$153 million for the company’s Adhesives and Sealants segment declined by 4% compared with the equivalent period of 2001. However, the company says that on a comparable basis, excluding the sales of the Liquid Polysulfide business, which it exited during 2001, sales rose 6%. The business saw good demand increases in some key segments, particularly environment-friendly adhesives and interior trim automotive adhesives. This standard ensures that any contaminants that leach or migrate into potable water from rubber, plastic, metal or other water system component materials are within acceptably safe levels. Parker provides 10 ethylenepropylene terpolymer rubber compounds, seven thermoplastic elastomers, and two nitrile compounds to meet the NSF 61 requirements. It says that seals and gaskets formulated from these organic materials provide longterm resistance to swelling, and will be prevented from breaking down in the presence of water treatment chemicals. NSF 61 covers end-point devices, and all components contained within the final 1 litre of the distribution system, including taps, coolers, heaters, filters and residential ice makers. Parker’s family of NSF 61 seal materials can be formed into tap and shower gaskets, water filter gaskets, valve seals and seats, pipe coupling seals, diaphragms and Orings that are used in pumps, heaters and other appliances. Seals are typically supplied in the form of moulded O-rings, flat washers, custom moulded shapes and extruded strips. The locking system, which is also suitable for high vibration applications, provides a positive feedback response, eliminating any misconnection. A wide range of seals is available. Nitrile is standard, but options include fluorocarbon, ethylenepropylene and fluorosilicone seals, which makes the coupling suitable for use with a range of fluids. seal behind the outer flange. No welding is required. The seal comprises two rubber halves, with peel-back layers that are removed to conform to the cable diameter. The seal, with cable attached, is then inserted into the sleeve and secured by tightening the seal’s compression plates, to secure the cable and seal within the sleeve. Cables with pre-terminated connectors can be passed through the sleeve opening before sealing takes place, eliminating the need to dismantle and reassemble the connector, says the company. This speeds up build time on new enclosures and cabinets, simplifies maintenance and promotes greater system reliability. The seals are suitable for indoor and outdoor use in a range of industries that require protection up to IP66/67. Typical applications are found in the utility services, and they also can be used in control and industrial instrumentation cabinets.

Roxtec, a specialist in cable and pipe penetration seals, has introduced the CRST seal for single cable points of entry. The system can be installed quickly and it is easily adaptable, and when it includes Roxtec’s MultiDiameter Technology, the company claims that it is more effective than traditional glands. The seals can be installed in cabinets with a wall thickness of up to 28 mm. They effectively protect against water, mist, dust, vibration and aggressive agents. product offers superior performance over other plastics modifiers for the impact modification of polyethylenes and polypropylenes. Engage polyolefin elastomer is the key ingredient in thermoplastic elastomers and olefin compounds used in a wide breadth of applications. Data from the DuPont Dow tests also showed that it provides an excellent balance of flow properties, flexural modulus and impact properties. It provided considerable impact improvement compared with other commonly used modifiers, even at significantly lower loadings, says the company. The three grades included in the tests were Engage 8842, Engage 8003 and Engage 8407. These were compared with other modifiers including ethylene-propylene terpolymer rubber and reactor thermoplastic olefins. For the tests, Engage and the other modifiers were blended with a 12 melt index homopolymer polypropylene and 10 melt index high-density polyethylene.
