Hybrid HVOF spray system to produce
T&N enjoys year of PM profits and expansion
THE thermal spray equipment manufacturer, Sulzer Metco, has developed a hybrid of its high velocity oxygen fuel process (HVOF) to produce denser, tougher surface coatings. HVOF is typically used for spraying wear and corrosion resistant coatings on bearing surfaces, journals and gate valves. The hybrid process is based upon a new design of its ‘Diamond Jet’ spray gun in which gas velocities are raised from 1250 m/set to 2100 m/ sec. As a result, Sulzer says surface coatings are achieved with the highest bond strength and toughness, together with the least porosity obtainable by any thermal spray system to date. A new gas mixing design and a nozzle modification mean the spray gun can be cooled by air and water without a heat exchanger. The gases are led to
THE powder metallurgy (PM) operations of the multinational engineering company T&N plc grew significantly during the fiscal year ending 31 December, 1995. Both turnover and profits were up, mainly as a result of the acquisition of Sintertech’s operations in France. The company’s PM activities were reported in the results of its Composites and Camshafts Group which saw its turnover for the year increase 31% compared with 1994 to reach f300.5 million. Operating profit, before some exceptional charges, was up 35% to s40.6 million for the same period. Following the Sintertech purchase, T&N has made PM one of its ten product groups, a move which came into effect from 1 June, 1995. Chief executive of the T&N’s Powder Metal Products group, John Chatwin, said in 1995 the company continued to make substantial progress in expanding its range of automotive products. In addition to increasing its size, Chatwin said the Sintertech deal also gave the company access to the market for PM self-lubricating bearings and high integrity structural parts for cars. In terms of geographic markets, Chatwln said Brico Engineering in Coventry, UK continued to improve its performance and was working with other product groups on an engineering systems approach to maximize the contribution of its components. A 2500 m2 expansion was completed at the plant during the year. In the USA, Chatwin reported that Brico Metals continued a trend of strong improvement with operating profit showing the benefits of previous restructuring, while Comtech maintained its strong performance. He said in South Korea YPM, T&N’s joint venture company, continued to establish itself as a supplier of valve train components to the local automotive industry. Particle monitor suitable for industrial amMcations I
A PARTICLE monitor suitable for dust monitoring in industrial applications has been introduced by Erwin Sick of St Albans, UK. The company says the ‘FW 56-l’ is a flexible, multi-functional instrument for dust monitoring, whose versatility makes it one of the most cost effective choices for industrial applications. The standard version of the unit incorporates a sender/receiver unit, reflector, signal processor and purge air supply unit. The sender/ receiver unit comprises the optical and electrical components required for transmitting and receiving the infra-red light beam. Operating on the principle of dual pass transmission, light is transmitted across from one side of the exhaust gas duct and reflected back to the receiver on the same side. The transmitted light from the
