This monograph, in the series Mujor ProhIen7s in Parhologj-, commences with a brief description of the anatomy and embryology of normal muscle and continues with a discussion of the standard reactions of muscle. The final chapter outlines the necessary steps in the investigation of a patient with muscle disease. The intervening chapters are devoted to a discussion of individual diseases, a short introduction to each chapter outlining its scope. The chapter on metabolic myopathies, for example, includes those associated with an endocrine disease, those due to a known muscle enzyme deficiency and miscellaneous myopathies including central core disease, centronuclear, nemaline and mitochondria1 myopathies. Clinical and biochemical features, in addition to changes seen with both the electron and light microscope, are included. The book is liberally illustrated but some of these appear to be unnecessary, particularly where more than one magnification is given of the one condition. The application of histochemistry to muscle disease is only briefly mentioned as this subject is to be discussed in a further volume in the series. It has been written partly for the beginner who will find this a useful introduction to the subject of myology, although a diagram of the ultrastructural features of muscle would make his path easier. Where, of necessity in a book of this size, information is limited. this can be supplemented by the many references given. W . A . Evans
Diseases o f Muscle: A Stucij, hi Patliology. 3rd Edition, RAYMOND D. ADAMS. 1975. Harper & Row, Hagerstown, Maryland. 586 pp.. illustrated. US$35.00. Dr Adams, with the assistance of Drs Pearson and Kar in the preparation of the chemistry section of Chapter 2, has personally revised this edition of Discwses qf'Muscle. Its format has been improved, the pages being slightly larger with double columns, but the reproduction of the illustrations from the previous edition is uneven. The overall theme continues to be the clinical features and the appearances seen with the light microscope of fixed material, whilst numbers of electron micrographs and photomicrographs of histochemical preparations have been included where appropriate. The author sounds a note of caution on the interpretation of changes seen with the electron microscope. Most of the original material remains, frequently extensivcly reorganized, and within this framework new information has been incorporated, reflecting the changes in myopathology since the second edition (1962). Some additions include work from the author's own
