Peer review report 1 on “Hydrological Simulation in a Basin of Typical Tropical Climate and Soil Using the SWAT Model Part I: Calibration and Validation Tests”

1. Original Submission 1.1. Recommendation Major Revision 2. Comments to Author There are some points that need to be addressed to make the paper publishable. See below: (i) Words that are in the title should not be repeated in the keywords; (ii) Line 62 − not clear why. Needs better explanation; (iii) To able to compare, it is crucial to have information about water user and users in the basin. How water demand is spatially distributed in the basin? And how it varies over time? With this information, we can have an idea of how the variation in demand impacts the validation and the simulation; (iv) Information regarding soil use should be improved. What type of native vegetation? Some information was presented in Table 2, but lacks some important ones, like root depth. (v) Units should be added in tables, like hydraulic conductivity in Table 3; (vi) It is important to have a better description of soil characteristic. Hydraulic conductivity for tropical yellow latosol should be even higher (150 mm h-1). This is a very important parameter in the calibration. (vii) Why did not use a more recent database? Is the calibration still valid? What about the increase in the water withdrawn? (viii) Processing time is not a good justification to use a manual calibration. Besides this, in the calibration we have a goal? What is the goal of the calibration (maximum, minimum, average?) (ix) Line 247 − What are basins with similar characteristics? In other words, what characteristics are similar? (x) It is difficult to understand the Proxy test, unless we have a clear description of the areas (soil, vegetation and the variation of water withdrawn) Lineu Rodrigues BR020 km18, Planaltina, Brasília, Distrito Federal 73310970, Brazil
