Peer review report 2 On “A perspective on optimal leaf stomatal conductance under CO2 and light co-limitations”
Original Submission Recommendation Accept Comments to Author This manuscript deals with an optimality approach to stomatal functioning. It presents a athematical approach on the coupling of the limiting factors of photosynthesis to stomatal unctioning, attempting to reconcile different interpretations of previous work by the authors and of Medlyn et al. I find their approach well presented and useful, although I feel that at plac0es there is too much mathematical interpretation rather than an ecophysiological interpretation. I recommend it for publication.

I only have minor comments. First, the assumption that lambda varies with Ca seems mostly mathematically justified and the assumption would be improved by more explicitly explaining the ecophysiological factors that shape lambda and why these factors should respond to Ca. Second, when the authors talk about long-term adjustments to Ca, they should also at least mention that stomatal density also changes with Ca, which should play a role in their onsiderations as well.
