ABSTRACTS

COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES FOR STUTTERING T. K E H O E Boulder, CO, USA

This paper presents the wide variety of computers and electronic devices used in stuttering treatment, divided into three classes: (1) Auditory feedback devices, which immediately reduce stuttering about 80%; (2) rate control devices, for training slow, prolonged speech; and (3) motor control biofeedback devices, for improving awareness and control of respiration, phonation, vocal energy, and speech-production muscle tension. Devices are discussed in the context of therapy programs. A new therapy--stuttering voice therapy-which uses biofeedback to train a relaxed, calm, clear voice, to improve the state of mind of the speaker and listener, as well as enable fluency, is also presented.

PEER TEASING PROJECT M. L A N G E V I N Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Children who stutter are often teased mercilessly because they stutter. Teasing, a lighter form of bullying, affects the quality of peer interactions which impact social-emotional development and sometimes academic performance. This project grew out of our experience and concern with stuttering children who have, to varying degrees, been affected by teasing endured in school and on the playground. The purpose of this project was to develop educational materials to change attitudes of elementary school children toward stuttering children and change attitudes of all children toward teasing and bullying. The rationale, objectives, and components of the educational materials will be described and pre- and post-intervention data evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention will be presented.
