Pelvic Pain: Diagnosis and Management, edited by Fred M. Howard, 529 pp, with illus, $89, Philadelphia, Pa, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (telephone: 800-638-3030), 2000, ISBN 07817-1724-8 Type of Book: A multiauthored textbook on the etiology, diagnosis, and management of pelvic pain. Scope of Book: This text provides a comprehensive multisystem review of the myriad causes of pelvic pain and current management strategies. Contents: The book is divided into 3 sections. The first section deals with history taking, physical examination, and diagnostic studies appropriate for patients with pelvic pain. Section 2 focuses on specific causes of pelvic pain by organ system—reproductive, gastrointestinal, urinary, and musculoskeletal systems—and systemic, metabolic, and other types of diseases that can cause pelvic pain. The chapters are well organized and follow the sequence of symptoms, signs, diagnostic tests, differential diagnosis, and treatment of the disorder. Each chapter concludes with key points presented in a bullet format for review. Section 3 covers chronic pelvic pain as a diagnosis and the relationship of physical and sexual abuse to chronic pelvic pain. Strengths: This book is readable, well referenced, current, and comprehensive. Deficiencies: Some gastrointestinal and urinary system causes of pelvic pain are covered in less depth than reproductive and musculoskeletal system causes. Recommended Readership: The book is directed toward obstetricians and gynecologists, but it would also be an excellent reference source for libraries and for all health care providers involved in the care of women with pelvic pain. Overall Grading: #### Mary M. Gallenberg, MD, Section of Medical Gynecology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn
Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders in Primary Care, edited by Gayle E. Woodson, 289 pp, with illus, $45, Philadelphia, Pa, WB Saunders Co (telephone: 800-545-2522), 2001, ISBN 0-72167431-3 Type of Book: A multiauthored review and reference source on otorhinolaryngology for primary care physicians. Scope of Book: A review of the anatomy, physiology, and treatment of upper aerodigestive tract disorders. Contents: The initial 2 chapters of the text offer a brief orientation to the anatomy and examinations that are important in dealing with diseases of the head and neck. The rest of the book consists of problem-oriented chapters that outline approaches to specific ailments in a logical fashion. Terminology is defined, and examination techniques and appropriate ancillary testing are reviewed. Treatment regimens are recommended for entities that can be handled in the primary care or emergency department setting. Recommendations and reasons for referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist follow these discussions. A “Key Points” section provides useful pearls for many of the conditions.
Mayo Clin Proc, August 2001, Vol 76
Strengths: The “Key Points” and “When to Refer” sections are helpful additions for busy practitioners and foster an attitude of teamwork with the specialist. The problem-oriented format is easy to use, and each chapter is short enough to refresh one’s knowledge in a single sitting. Deficiencies: Although attempts were made to review anatomy in the first 2 chapters, it was covered more effectively in the later problem-oriented discussions. The language is cumbersome at times, mixing folksy terms with scientific descriptions. Recommended Readership: Primary care or other health care providers who are interested in expanding or refreshing their knowledge base with an easy-to-use reference source. Overall Grading: ★★★★ William C. Mundell, MD, Division of Area General Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn
