Stability problems of rubble mound breakwaters and their foundations subject to earthquake or wave Ioadings are examined. Where foundation soils are weak, they may be excavated and replaced by sand. The use of a submerged breakwater with piled wave screen founded through fill materials and sand replacing poor ground is illustrated.

Aug 1990, P409-417 Debris flows in confined mountain channels were studied in the Knowles Creek Basin of the Oregon Coast Range, USA. Initiation, travel distance and erosion, deposition, and gradation were examined. An empirical model to predict deposition has been developed which uses two criteria, channel slope angle and tributary junction angle. It has been tested against flows in the study area and from other regions, where approximate travel distances were estimated from aerial photographs, and gives satisfactory results. 913426 Instrumented laboratory flowslides Eckersley. Events reproduced field behaviour, with sudden collapse, rapid flow-like motion, and very flat final slopes. Failure initiated under essentially static, drained conditions, where the effective strength parameter was considerably less than the steady state value. Instrumentation revealed excess pore pressures were generated during rather than before movement, liquefaction being a result of shear failure rather than a cause.

P!6071624 Layout of horizontal drains used to stabilise slopes is usually determined from design charts or on the basis of engineering judgement. Centrifuge tests on model drained slopes have been used to study distribution of phreatic levels within the slopes, and results are compared to reference tests on undrained slopes and computer simulations. Data can be used

to verify or develop design charts. The limited capacity of the centrifuge used places restrictions on slope geometry, but the usefulness of the approach is demonstrated.

Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1990 The stability of opencast mine slopes, several hundreds of meters high, has been studied by means of geological investigations and measurements of geostatic stress, shearing resistance, and deformational properties of the rock massif. On the basis of analysis made by the finite element method, the development of slope disturbance has been predicted and a monitoring system has been proposed. The data obtained using this system are employed for refining the prognosis of the slope behaviour during proceeding mining work. In ensuring slope stability, especially in weathered rocks, old slopes are studied and reassessed in order to identify those requiring stabilization. These studies include aerial photographic interpretation, geological mapping, sampling, and probing. Details of these studies, including groundwater monitoring and the slope model, are presented.

Publ Melbourne: AuslMM, 1989 The Pemali open pit mine has experienced slope stability problems, most of which have been associated with high rainfall. Measures to reduce these problems include reducing the overall slope angle to 20 deg, construction of drainage ditches and trenches, and installation of drainage holes at the bench toes. Back analysis using the major west wall failure and the application of computer programs using the obtained parameters in order to stabilise the east wall are discussed.
