FOCUS the assumption that the reaction rate is proportional to the measured heat flow at any point. In addition to the cure kinetics, the Flow model needs a quantitative assessment of the powder fluidity as a function of the temperature and degree of conversion in the temperature range from Tg to Tg + 120°C. It is shown that by applying the test readings in appropriate mathematical equations the Flowcure model can be applied to calculate the degree of conversion; the actual viscosity of the curing powder; and film and powder flow data. Applying the SALSA method the authors have determined the flow characteristics of a low temperature cure pigmented powder coating based on one of their experimental amorphous resins. This product cured at 140°C was found to have better flow properties than the unpigmented acid hydroxyl powder cured at 200°C. It is calculated that the lowest viscosity of this powder during curing at 140°C is as low as 17 Pa.s. When cured at 140°C for 20 minutes the spray applied powder coating gave very good flow and appearance and good mechanical properties. Major industrial and marine coatings supplier Hempel is expanding its presence in India with a production plant in Nashik, Maharashtra. The facility will be equipped with the latest environment-friendly machines for producing coatings, including an automatic liquid dosing system, a semi-automatic powder handling system and a solvent recovery unit. The firm aims to achieve a turnover of more than €8 M by 2013, twice the 2010 level, and triple it to over €25 M by end2015. Hempel also intends to invest roughly €15-20 M in a greenfield project.
Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive). Halogenand toxic gas-free FR wood coatings that form a blanket of solid material to prevent fire from spreading are also being developed by Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A Star). A Star’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering believes that it can develop FRs that are based on nanoclays, which are found to perform well as an interlayer coating in solvents and exhibit fire retardant barriers and properties. AkzoNobel has already developed a synthetic organoclay for use as a flame retardant synergist and the green FR Perkguard 930 for use in niche rubbers and acrylics. Global chemical major BASF is also working on a range of FRs, including flame-retardant coatings and flame retardants for coatings. These include the firm’s Conipur range and polypropylene and melamine-based flame-retardant engineering plastics.

Flame-retardants go green as environmental regulations tighten
Jotun purchases land for factory construction
Global coatings major AkzoNobel, which recently established a fire protection laboratory worth €7 M in the UK, said that the demand for more environmentally friendly fire retardants will increase two-fold by 2018 with the global environmental legislations becoming more rigid, including in the Asia Pacific. A European Union (EU)-based legislation requiring international producers to comply with global EU standards has been the main driver for the search for greener flame retardants. The trend has been advanced by regional environmental regulations such as the EU’s RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances directive), which prohibits the use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers-containing halogenated flame retardant additives, and the WEEE (Waste
Jotun Paints has acquired nine hectares of land in the Fedorovsky Industrial Park in Russia as the first step in constructing a factory for production of paint and powder coatings. When completed, the factory will have a capacity to produce up to 15 M litres/y of paint and 3000 tonnes/y of powder coatings. Jotun’s total investment in the project will be approximately $50 M. The industrial park is being developed by the company FedImmobelin, near the town of Fedorovsky in the Tosno District of Leningrad Region, with the investor being UFG Real Estate Group. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The signing ceremony was arranged for 31 Aug 2011.
