Water Environment Federation Online L i b r a r y The Water Environment Federation recently launched an online library from www.wef.org which enables users to search from hundreds of Federation documents published in 1999 and 2000, and download selections in Adobe® format. This new service is ideal for anyone needing easy access to some of the best and latest water quality information available today. The online library will include articles on water quality and wastewater topics from WEF technical magazines and newsletters (such as Water Environment Research, Water Environment & Technology, Industrial Wastewater, and Biosolids Technical Bulletin), and papers delivered at Federation conferences. This new service marks the first time WEF has made full-text of its articles and
conference papers available online. The service is open to both WEF members and non-members and downloaded documents must be purchased. Fully searchable by author, title, key word, time frame, publication name, and document type, the WEF online library allows web users a quick and convenient method for finding water quality information. If an abstract of a paper or article is available, users may click an "Abstract" link for a more detailed summary of the document. Once users have made their selection(s), they may click "Purchase Articles" and "Check Out" buttons to complete the transaction and begin downloading. Currently, more than 750 items are available in the database. New material will be added in October, including papers delivered at WEFTEC 2000, the Federation's annual technical conference being held October 14-18, 2000 in Anaheim, California.

Pentair Pentair's Water Technologies Group has launched an e-commerce web site to increase its already-substantial water purification business in Asia. The site, called e-watershop India (e-watershop.com), is designed as an electronic shopping store for Pentair's large portfolio of water products. It also serves as a point of reference for helpful information about the importance of clean, potable water to consumers, public health agencies, and industry. The site presents a wide range of products that can be ordered directly online and are increasingly in demand for water treatment and purification applications in India and other expanding economies in Asia. Pentair is a leading supplier of quality water-purification components throughout the world, and has a significant share of the market in India. The company has a major manufacturing facility in Goa that serves the Indian market and also exports products to the United States and Europe. The company reckons this initiative will serve its existing customers more effectively and efficiently, while broadening its customer base in India and other Asian countries. Expecting strong initial success of e-watershop India, Pentair is planning to launch a second e-watershop in the fall of 2000 to serve Taiwan, China, and Southeast Asia, a region that the company believes offers'an even larger potential for growth because of the expanding need for pure water. The web site, e-watershop Asia, will be available to customers in traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, and English.

PCM P o m p e s PCMPompes.com first opened for business three years ago, but it's just received a complete makeover for 2000. While the company itself concedes the first version mainly consisted of an on-line catalogue, the new website offers a more commercially driven approach to its visitors, aiming to be practical, useful and interactive. The site is available in both French and English, a feature that PCM Pompes says reflects the enormous level of Internet activity in France, but also supports the company's ongoing development overseas. By improving the functionality of the site, the company hopes to improve its responsiveness and better meet the needs of its clients. Several modes of access are offered: by activity sector, products or the range of services, wherever the location. Visitors will notice the presence of a special oil activity section on the site. This explanation, apparently, is that this sector represents a high proportion of the PCM Pompes' business, and the plan is to put its expertise and know-how on-line. Interestingly, the owners say the new pcmpompes.com site aims to fulfil what might be described as the "traditional sales function." When customers need information about products or specific applications, they now want responses on-line. Sales reps increasingly, therefore, perform a different function. Customer visits now have a different purpose and objective. The sales reps visit customers to study specific projects for which they can provide added value. By being true experts in their field, they can offer customised technical specifications for each installation.
