Perinatal e A second time around It was for a second time that we got together with our medical colleagues e the British Maternal and Fetal Medicine Society, the British Association of Perinatal Medicine and The Neonatal Society e to host a joint conference at Perinatal Medicine 2011 in June. Exactly three years ago was the first time we made the first successful venture so we tried the formula again. Indeed, centralisation of resources makes sense for a number of reasons, since the range and diversity of sessions that can be made available to all delegates, irrespective of which organisation they have an affiliation to, is far greater than can ever be achieved in a conference hosted by a single organisation. Furthermore, such a conference can command the benefit of a luxurious national conference centre, and the sheer number of delegates is economic for exhibitors, all of which takes the conference to a higher level. However, it took almost the entire three years interval to put together just the two and a half days of conference experience. The planning of every detail, the content and delivery of the sessions was intense to ensure that each minute of the conference was inspiring and stimulating for all the delegates. It was all worthwhile, all the speakers without exception were excellent and
many delegates found themselves enthused by subjects that previously they might have passed by. Parallel sessions were hosted by each individual organisation and gave the best of both worlds, as it allowed participants to resort to smaller, more focused discussions surrounded by their own colleagues. This gave the NNA the opportunity to hold our Annual General Meeting, the minutes of which are now available on our website e www.nna.org.uk. It was evident that meeting up with colleagues and associates from the past was one of the highlights of the conference. Although as is the case at most conferences, time is sometimes against us all in terms of permitting networking opportunities due to the full agendas! The conference dinner was exceptional, amazing atmosphere, good food and a cook’s farewell that evolved into three incredible opera singers. It is likely that we may all meet again in another three years. The idea is good and it is now becoming an established meeting on the conference calendar. Dee Beresford E-mail address:
