periodontal disease and including nutrition; (4) hematology; (5) examination and charting procedures; (6) classification, diagnosis, and prognosis of periodontal disease; (7) endodontics in periodontal prosthesis; (8) orthodontics in periodontal prosthesis ; (9) the temporomandibular joint, with three pages on evolutionary development and embryologic and histlogic factors; (10) ocelusal adjustment; (11) periodontal splinting; (12) periodontics and prosthodontic restorative procedures, including laboratory procedures; and (13) treatment planning and problem cases. Volume TI has five chapters, each devoted to a thorough discussion of an individual case. Some very technically difficult procedures are described in detail; for example, retrograde endodontic treatment of a lower left central incisor, a procedure which demands substantial care and skill, even in the hands of an endodontist or an oral surgeon. It is important, however, for the general practitioner to know that key teeth can be saved in this way. Several techniques of using both parallel and nonparallel pins in making bridges and splints are taught. Both tooth preparation and laboratory procedures are discussed. Tcmporomandibular radiography and panographic radiography are discussed, but no mention is made of the fact that with the Panorex it is rather simple to obtain good views of the temporomandibular joint. The entire subject of home care and oral physiotherapy is disposed of in two pages, with no mention of the use of wooden toothpicks or Stimudents as possible aids in removing plaque and maintaining gingival health. The use of disclosing tablets or solutions is not discussed, and toothbrushing is given only a superficial discussion. More illustrations would be helpful, and there arc very few photographs. In Volume IT, charts and drawings accompany the case reports, but not a single radiograph or photograph is reproduced. This limits the reader’s perspective considerably. Even with the book’s shortcomings, Drs. Grieder and Cinotti provide an excellent review of dentistry, as well as introducing some new ideas and techniques which the dentist can incorporate into his diagnosis and treatment planning to provide better care for his patients. Edward iv. Green. Therapy. Henry M. Goldman and 11. Walter Cohen. Fourth edition. St. Louis, 1968, The C V. Mosby Company. 1072 pages, 811 illustrations. Price, $23.00. Periodontal Therapy is a classic textbook that has been revised often to reflect the existing knowledge of the total treatment of a diseased periodontium. It is a compilation of twentyfive leading contributors as well as its principal authors, Goldman and Cohen. These clinicians have written excellent monographs, with coverage in this edition including epidemiology of periodontal disease, preventive periodontics, patient motivation, patient maintenance, and the healing of surgical wounds, as well as a short treatise on practice administration. A most important contribution is the chapter concerning the general health status affecting periodontal disease and the functions of a medical evaluation. Preventive periodontics should be the constant concern of all dental practitioners working with vital teeth. Thts preventive measures taken by the dentist, are extensively reviewed, especially the elementary but complete oral prophylaxis. This single treatment is of greatest significance to the oral health of the patient, but is probably the one most often slighted by dentist and patient,. The text emphasizes the importance of patient motivation and, more important to us, the presentation of the oral hygiene regime to the patient. An excellent monograph reviews the literat, ure concerning healing of periodontal wounds from curettage and osseous surgery, to partial and full-thickness mucoperiosteal flaps. Sound excellent illustrations, and a comprehensive bibliography contribute to an presentation, excellent textbook that should be on your library shelf for further knowledge of t,his most important facet of dentistry.
