Ultra-hygienic p r o c e s s plant p u m p introduced Full scale ultra-hygienic process p l a n t s m a y b e n e f i t from ITT J a b s c o ' s l a u n c h of the 55600 series of positive d i s p l a c e m e n t p u m p s . With a m a x i m u m flow of u p to 670 1/min, these p u m p s have b e e n designed for process a p p l i c a t i o n s r e q u i r i n g hygienic conditions. These rotary lobe pumps have a n u m b e r of n e w design f e a t u r e s to o p t i m i s e p e r f o r m a n c e at higher flow rates. The design of r o t o r r e t a i n e r m i n i m i s e s d i s m a n t l i n g of the p u m p for r o t o r removal a n d m a k e s servicing easier, since the r e t e n t i o n m e c h a n i s m is ext e r n a l to the p u m p chamber. The 5 5 6 0 0 s e r i e s also u s e s Scimitar-type rotors, which ensure s m o o t h p u m p i n g of viscous liquid a n d high efficiencies with t h i n liquids. The b e a r i n g h o u s i n g is m a n ufactured from corrosion-resist a n t stainless steel in a vertical p o r t - a x i s configuration, so t h a t the p u m p will b l e n d in well with other ultra-hygienic compon e n t s in the process line. Several design features have been i n c o r p o r a t e d to m e e t the d e m a n d for higher s t a n d a r d s of Clean in Place (CIP) a n d Sterilise in Place (SIP) i n t r o d u c e d by bodies such as the E u r o p e a n Hygienic Equipment Design Group (EHEDG). Peristaltic p u m p s freed from corrosion Heraeus Instruments has l a u n c h e d a new line of high q u a l i t y peristaltic p u m p s with stainless steel casings -- designed to suit a wide range of a p p l i c a t i o n s a n d s u i t a b l e for use in wet e n v i r o n m e n t s a n d clean room conditions. P u m p h o u s i n g s are m a n u f a c tured in corrosion r e s i s t a n t s t a i n l e s s steel which h a s no electromagnetic r a d i a t i o n properties to d i s t u r b sensitive electronic instruments in the laboratory. A n o t h e r key feature of the Pericor design is the ease with which t u b i n g can be inserted. Spring m o u n t e d rollers make it more difficult a n d time c o n s u m ing to insert tubes, overstressing the t u b e a n d r e d u c i n g its serviceable life. Pericor p u m p s , by contrast, are fitted with three rollers, with the o p t i o n to fit 8 rollers or dual c h a n n e l h e a d s offering virtually pulse free ope r a t i o n -- a n a d v a n t a g e w h e n processing fluids which c o n t a i n sensitive biological molecules. Two base p u m p types are available: the Pericor SF is a n a n a l o g u e - c o n t r o l l e d u n i t with variable running speeds and the capability to change direction of flow. The Pericor CD has microprocessor control a n d offers various speed, v o l u m e a n d dosing options.
Pericor peristaltic p u m p s can be s u p p l i e d in a range of sizes w i t h flow r a t e s from a few m i c r o l i t r e s u p to 1500 1/hr. The p u m p s can be r u n dry for processing of gaseous as well as liquid materials.

Double diaphragm design eliminates rocking
Abel has designed a new range of e l e c t r o m e c h a n i c a l l y d r i v e n d o u b l e - d i a p h r a g m p u m p s with a simple a n d r o b u s t design to m e e t the needs of c o n t i n u o u s heavy d u t y applications. The r a n g e is d e s i g n e d for p r e s s u r e s u p to 90 psi a n d capacities u p to 300 gpm. The e l e c t r o m e c h a n i c a l diap h r a g m p u m p s , model EM, are available in seven sizes with cast m e t a l or plastic wet ends. T h e s e sizes service a b r o a d r a n g e of c u s t o m e r r e q u i r e m e n t s . A s e l e c t i o n of valve seats, b a l l s a n d d i a p h r a g m s with various m a t e r i a l s of cons t r u c t i o n can be used to optimize c o m p a t i b i l i t y w i t h t h e m e d i a being p u m p e d . The double-acting diap h r a g m p u m p s are reciprocating positive-displacement pumps. The drive consists of a s p u r gear a n d electric motor. By using s t a n d a r d c o n n e c t i o n s the p u m p s will a c c o m m o d a t e other drive c o n f i g u r a t i o n s as well, such as c o m b u s t i o n , hydraulic a n d p n e u m a t i c motors or other gear m o t o r types. The p u m p s have two housings. Each h o u s i n g is divided into a drive e n d a n d a fluid end by a fabric-reinforced, molded d i a p h r a g m . The d i a p h r a g m s have a n i n t e g r a t e d metal core, which e l i m i n a t e s the need for s u p p o r t plates in c o n t a c t with the media. This d i a p h r a g m arr a n g e m e n t avoids any possible d a m a g e or c o n t a m i n a t i o n of the media. A l i n e a r drive converts the
