Hydrogeology 773076 STUDIES IN SOIL-WATER HYDROLOGY Watson, K K Sc D thesis, N ~ SOuth Wales Umlv, 1976 Brings togethe~ a series of studies, the aims of which were (I) ~he development arzl testing of measuring equipment capable of adequately characterizing the soil-water system, to give an increased understarzli~g of the hehaviour of the system trader natural environmental conditions, and (2) the accurate simulation of the process of water movement in unsaturated soils for a wide range of hourdary and soil conditions. An analytical tool based on the finite element methoi h~s been developed, using segments of s curved bar with 3 degrees of freedom at each end to s~,late a thin pipe, triangular, isoparametric elements with one curved boundary 3 midside nodes to simulate the soil, an interaction element with zero thickness to simulate interface behaviour. A computer program was written and used on some examples to investigate the influence of nonlinear soil properties, rel~bive stiffness of pipe and soil, inclusion of weak materials near the spring line, and construction ~rocedures. ~ The study does not consider time-dependent pro:erties, temporary loads or cracking c~ yielding of the pipe Avail: University Microfilms, 18 Bedford Row, London WCIR 4EJ, UK
