POSTPONED In view of the recently announced 4th International Symposium on Pertussis, sponsored by the International Association of Biological Standardization and the World Health Organization, to be held at the WHO, Geneva, September 25-27 1984, the Organising Committee and the FEMS Executive have been obliged to postpone the planned Symposium in the GDR. I t will be held in the GDR at a date to be announced. 17-20 June 1985 MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF MICROBIAL PATHOGENICITY:~ADHESION, INVASION AND RECEPTORS, Ume~, Sweden. organised by: S.Normark, B.E.Uhlin and H.Wolf-Watz on behalf of the Swedish Society for Microbiology and the University of UmeA. Speakers will include: M.So (USA), K-A. Karlsson (Sweden), S.Svensson (Sweden), T.Korhonen (Finland), F.Mooi (Netherlands), F. de Graaf (Netherlands), P.Klemm (Denmark). The emphasis will be on the interaction of microorganisms and their products with host cells at the molecular level. Presentations (20-40 minutes) by invited speakers will include: A. Bacterial Adhesins: 1. Adhesins as virulence factors. 2. Gene organisation and regulation. 3. Structure and function of gene products encoded by adhesin gene clusters. 4. Pili adhesins as antigens, antigenic variation. 5. Non-pili adhesins. 6. Evolution and epidemiology of adhesins. 7. Adhesins as potential vaccines. B. Invasive Bacteria: 1. Genetic determinants of invasive bacteria. 2. Surface structures involved in invasion. C. Receptors for Microbial Adhesins and Toxins: 1. Identification and structure determination. 2. Natural and synthetic receptor analogues. 3. Adhesin-receptor interactions. 4. Possible use of receptor analogues in prophylaxis and therapy. Contributed papers w i l l be in the form of poster sessions. Round Table discussions will be organised. Number of participants is restricted to 100. Fee: $400 (includes meals and shared room). Applicants should indicate areas of research which j u s t i f y their consideration as participants. Students should enclose a letter of recommendation. (Scottish Crop Research Institute) and B.W.J.Mahy (Animal Virus Research Institute) on behalf of the Virus Group of the Society for General Microbiology. The meeting will be held at Churchill College, Cambridge. Invited speakers will discuss genome organization and function in symposia on each of the f i r s t two mornings, and the functional organization of virus particles in a symposium on the final morning. Sessions for offered paper presentations and workshops will be held in the afternoons. The topics to be covered will include: Translation mechanisms in picornaviruses (Palmenberg, Wisconsin), translation of monopartite genomes of plant viruses (Haenni, Paris), coronavirus genomes (Sidde11, Wurzburg), comovirus genome strategy (van Kammen, Wageningen), translation and replication of togovirus RNA (Strauss, Pasadena), picornavirus replication (Wimmer, Stonybrook), tobacco mosaic virus molecular architecture (Butler, Cambridge) and picornavirus proteins and antigenicity (Minor, London).
