Ceramic microfiltration membranes added to r a n g e Ceramic microfiltration m e m b r a n e s have been added to the range of ultraflltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis m e m b r a n e s from PCI Membrane Systems. Supplied b y a leading US manufacturer, CeraMem Separations, the m e m b r a n e s allow economical processing of pharmaceutical, fine chemical a n d certain waste water applications, says the company. A new pilot plant fitted with the CeraMem m e m b r a n e s will soon be available for conducting customer development trials and feasibility studies. In certain applications, a slngle-step microfiltration process c a n replace several unit operations in conventional processing. Using its tubular systems, PCI MS h a s installed systems for the concentration, purification and desalting of a wide range of chemical a n d p h a r m a c e u t i c a l process liquors and waste waters. H2S r e m o v a l in Pt-based membrane reactor The application of platinum-based metal-membrane reactors for removal of hydrogen sulfide from natural gas streams h a s been investigated by researchei's in the USA (J. Membr. Scl., 94, pp 111-119). They demonstrated that composite-metal m e m b r a n e s can be used to remove hydrogen during the decomposition of H2S from H2S/CH4 streams, thereby shifting the reaction equilibrium a n d allowing higher conversions t h a n can normally be obtained. In the system, H2S decomposes to yield H2 and elemental sulphur, environmentally benign products. The m e m b r a n e reactor operates at 700°C, a n d a
