Petrochina planning hydrocracking unit PetroChina Co Ltd is investing $3.29 bn to expand capacity at its refining and petrochemical complex at Dushanzi, Xinjiang Province, China. It will install UOP LLC proprietary technology in a hydrocracking facility which is due onstream in 2007. The unit will process 41,000 bbl/day of gasoil to produce ethylene and diesel.

Foster Wheeler wins hydrotreater project Foster Wheeler Iberia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Foster Wheeler, has signed a detailed engineering, equipment and material supply, and construction contract with AB Mazeikiai Nafta, for a fluid catalytic cracker gasoline selective hydrotreater unit (Axens license) at Mazeikiai refinery in northwest Lithuania. The contract value is about $43 M. The termination of the project is scheduled for 4Q 2006. Qatar Petroleum, Sasol Chevron sign MOU for GTL base oil project Qatar Petroleum and Sasol Chevron announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for GTL Base Oils. The Memorandum of Understanding defines how the two parties intend to design, construct, and operate a Base Oils plant in Qatar as a value-add retrofit to ORYX GTL. Expected start-up is the 1H of 2008. ORYX GTL, a jv between Qatar Petroleum and Sasol, is a world first and is the largest commercial GTL plant outside South Africa. The new Base Oils plant will produce a range of high quality base oils. GTL base oils are the primary feedstock for high quality lubricants. The technology for the Base Oils project will be supplied by Chevron Texaco.

NEW TECHNOLOGY Peroxide-PO processes integrated DegussaHeadwaters, a jv of Degussa and the technology company Headwaters, has successfully integrated its pilot plant for synthesizing hydrogen peroxide directly from hydrogen and oxygen with a pilot plant for producing propylene oxide from hydrogen peroxide. DegussaHeadwaters expects to make the route commercially available in 2007. The companies believe they can reduce the investment cost for integrated H2O2 plants by a third to a half, relative to conventional technology (see Focus on Catalysts, Dec 2004, 6, and the patent abstract below).
