TECHNICAL NOTES Processing characteristics of long fibre reinforced nylon 66

This paper, by ICI in the UK, discusses the influenceof microstructure on the stiffness and toughness of long glass fibre reinforced nylon 66 mouldings. Whilst impact toughness is shown to be insensitive to processing conditions, slow crack propagation toughness is greatest in situations where the processing produces a pronounced core region of long fibres orthogonally aligned to the direction of crack propagation. Effect of additives on the non-linear viscoelastic behaviour of materials

(Sept.), 453-460

In an earlier paper the simulation of long-term behaviour by means of short-term tests was described; this was part of an engineering design concept for plastics developed at IKV, Aachen. As an extension of this work, it is now shown how additives (e.g. plasticizers, moisture) affect the non-linear viscoelastic behaviour of materials. A computer description of these effects on the mechanical properties of thermoplastics, in terms of materials-related knowledge, is prominent in this work. Kunststoff’e, 1989, 79, (Oct.), 1069-l 072

Weathering of calcium carbonate filled PVC window profiles

Very little is known about the influence of calcium carbonate, especially about varying degrees of filling, particularly in regard to external applications like window frames, tubes, roller shutters and door frames. The present study provides a correlation between the mechanical properties after a ten year open-air weathering programme in a Central European climate and an accelerated weathering test in a Weather-O-Meter for more than 10,000 h. The selected degrees of filling (up to 25 parts of calcium carbonate) are approximately double the quantities of filler that are usually used today in PVC windows. The values of tensile strength that improve with increasing degrees of filling after open-air- weathering and the excellent values of Charpy notch strength are emphasized. Carbon black filled compounds

This paper outlines the steady progress of carbon tilled compounds in electrical applications, and concludes that the development possibilities are by no means exhausted. Kunststoffe, 1989, 79, (Oct.), 1009-1011

Photo-crosslinking of polythene

High density polythene sheets can be photo-crosslinked in the melt at a high crosslinking rate. 4-chlorobenzophenone was found to be the most effective among 18 photoinitiators examined at The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. J. Poly. Sci., Part A, 1989,27,
