Reviews in the sciences range from what are essentially lists of references in a broad field to detailed analyses of a few papers on a specialist topic. The enormity of the tasks that the reporters in this series have taken on forces their approach to be close to the former limit. Thus Mann gives 2363 references to non-proton NMR spectroscopy in 133 small pages, more than one third of which are occupied by the references themselves. Clearly little critical comment is possible, but the author manages to retain a readable style in his exhaustive article. A little more discussion and data is available in the other sections dealing with vibrational, rotational, NQR and Mijssbauer spectroscopy. This volume remains the best source of recent references in selected fields for research workers starting new topics and provides an annual check list of references for established investigators.
