New Disc Skimmer
can identify the size and position of a leak, minimizing any environmental impact and loss of production. Preliminary analysis of a pipeline provides detailed performance expectations for PIMS on the minimum size of detectable leak, leak locati.on and accuracy, and the minimum time required to detect a leak. Transmitton also says that PIMS can carry out batch tracking, minimum and maximum pressure detection, pig tracking, composition tracking, instrument analysis, and survival time analysis.
Vikoma International Ltd. has recently produced a new disc skimming device for effluent treatment, the Kebab 9X, which is unmanned and can work continuously either floating freely or as a fixed installation. The skimmer was developed for use in applications where effluent must be treated to remove floating oils or fats before being discharged into rivers or the sea. The Kebab 9X uses Vikoma's oleophilic disc principle. Ten vertically mounted discs on the unit rotate at speeds of up to 40 rpm. Surface fats and oils adhere to the discs and are automatically scraped off and are transferred to storage. Recovery rates of up to 9 t h-~ are claimed and the recovered pollutant usually has a water content of less than 2%. The Kebab 9X can be supplied as a self-contained unit or as part of a system, and can be used with a Vikoma floating deflector or containment booms in lagoons and effluent canals. It can also work in hostile environments including acidic or alkaline conditions or in solvents. The floating unit weighs 219 kg and is about 1.5 X 1.5 x 0.75 m in size. The fixed unit is smaller and weighs only 132 kg.
Pipeline Leaks Monitor Transmitton of U K have developed a pipeline integrity management system (PIMS) under a collaborative agreement with the Scientific Software-Intercomp of the USA. The system locates leaks in operational pipelines using steady state mathematical modelling which
North Sea Field Database Mentor Engineering Consultants have developed a new database package to give easy access to information on North Sea oil and gas fields. The database works from a pictorial index showing a North Sea map, homing in on a particular field and then on the relevant data subsystem. Field data is accessed using a mouse. The package uses two proprietary pieces of software, Hypercard and Reports, to manage text and pictorial information. The subsystems contain information on the reservoir, terminal production profiles, field views, development projects, field block and facility details. Maintenance, operational and other records may also be added. Hypercard controls the appearance of the onscreen form for entering information and tailors it to the users needs. To allow text and graphic scanning, which needs a lot of memory capacity, Mentor suggests that available CD ROM systems should be used for information storage.
