Planning ahead One of the perennial chores for the late summer is c o m p i l i n g a list of exhibitions, c o n f e r e n c e s and trade s h o w s for the forthcoming year. We have just about completed the list for 1999 and it is interesting to reflect on the changes in emphasis from recent years. M o s t s i g n i f i c a n t is t h e s l o w d o w n in e v e n t activity in t h e Far East, n o s u r p r i s e t o s t u d e n t s o f international ccononlics or of company order b o o k s . In c o n t r a s t , n e x t y e a r s e e s f o u r S o u t h A m e r i c a n e x h i b i t i o n s in t h e W o r l d P u m p s diary. S o u t h A m e r i c a is, w i t h o u t d o u b t , p e r c e i v e d b y n m c h o f t h e w o r l d as t h e n e x t g r e a t e x p o r t o p p o r t u n i t y . H o w e v e r , k n o w l e d g e o f t h e r e g i o n is p o o r a n d t h e r e is relatively little tr~ade i n f r a s t r u c ture: an i n e v i t a b l e c o n s e q u e n c e o f l e n g t h y p e r i o d s w h e n t r a d e w a s tightly c o n t r o l l e d b y g o v e r n ments battling with unstable economies and p o l i t i c a l t u r m o i l . T h a n k f u l l y n o w t h i n g s are c h a n g i n g a n d in a s t a b l e e n v i r o n m e n t , i n t e r n a t i o n a l t r a d e is d e v e l o p i n g a p a c e .
