PROCESSING Plant for processing pentane blowing agent C-,N- as well as iso-pentanes are the primary alternatives for CFC-containing blowing agents in polyurethane processing. As an organic blowing agent, their essential advantage lies in their ability to replace CFCbased blowing agents completely, thereby eliminating the risks to the environment formerly presented by CFC. However, as certain mixtures of pentane and air concentrations can react explosively, the processing equipment has to meet specific regulations. Krauss-Maffei Kunststofftechnik, Munich, has developed the Pentamix TD-20C premixing station for the ready-to-process admixing of pentane with polyol. This unit meets all the necessary safety requirements. In the metering and mixing station, a closedloop controlled volume throughput of pentane is added to a constant volume of polyol, which had been determined beforehand. Both components are then mixed intensively in a downstream static mixer. When in automatic mode, component-level monitoring switches in the day- or buffer-tank trigger the mixing process. Initially, both components are pumped around independently of each other (internal recirculation). One flow meter each records the throughput rate of the polyol and the pentane, with the pentane volume being adjusted until the set mixing ratio has been achieved .

The computer enables the mixing process to commence, once the flow rate values have become stabilized. The component streams are conducted into the static mixer, from where they are discharged to a daytank or buffer container as blend. Compounder for thermoplastic starches Werner & Pfleiderer says that its ZSK twin screw compounder range is very suitable for processing thermoplastic starches. The machine has self cleaning screws and controlled energy input, with high rotating speeds for maximum throughput, achieving 20-3,000 kg/hr. Optimum colour measurement The Translucer device marketed by GabrielChemie in the UK, is designed to sample moulded parts and to gauge precisely not only the amount of colour they contain, but the minimum quantity of colorant that can be added to achieve a desired shade. The Translucer itself is a relatively simple piece of equipment comprising a 80386 or 80486 PC and a halogen light source in a U-shaped base unit. The PC is loaded with patented Gabriel-Chemie software, which analyses data and displays the dosing level as a percentage. The system can operate remotely or it can be looped back to the dosing unit to regulate addition rates on line. Contact: Gabriel-Chemie UK Ltd, 9 Penbroke Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 IXR, UK.
