In 1923 L O E B r e p o r t e d t h a t the p r e s e n c e o f t h e u t e r u s w a s e s s e n t i a l f o r a n o r m a l o v a r i a n f u n c t i o n in g u i n e a pigs n o t i n g t h a t the l t f e s p a n o f the c o r p u s l u t e u m w a s m a r k e d l y e l o n g a t e d f o l l o w i n g hysterectomy. A persisting corpus luteum following hysterectomy w a s s u b s e q u e n t l y found in v a r i o u s o t h e r s p e c i e s such as sheep, p i g , h a m s t e r and r a t ( C A L D W E L L ) .
M a n y a t t e m p t s h a v e been m a d e
to c l a r i f y t h i s p h e n o m e n o n . T h e r e is a c c u m u l a t i n g e v i d e n c e t h a t the p e r s i s t i n g c o r p u s t u t e u m is due to the a b s e n c e o f u t e r i n e p r o s t a g t a n d t n s . T h e m e c h a n i s m o f a c t i o n o£ p r o s t a g t a n d t n s has not y e t been c l a r i f i e d . therapeutic abortion.
MATERIAL
AND
METHODS
A h e a l t h y 29 y e a r s o l d f e m a l e w i t h a nor-mat m e n s t r u a l c y c l e o f 28 days w a s s t u d i e d f o r 4 c o n s e c u t i v e c y c l e s . P l a s m a p r o g e s t e r o n e l e v e l s w e r e d e t e r m i n e d d a i l y a c c o r d i n g t o a m o d i f i c a t i o n o f the m e t h o d as d e s c r i b e d by J O H A N N S O N ,

A t the end o f the f i r s t i n f u s i o n p l a s m a p r o g e s t e r o n e l e v e l s had d r o p p e d to a b o u t 65 o f the o r i g i n a l v a l u e , In 4 c a s e s t h e p r o g e s t e r o n e l e v e l s w e r e c o n t i n u o u s l y f a i l i n g d u r i n g the i n t e r m i s s i o n t i m e .
In t w o cases the
d e c r e a s e w a s tess p r o n o u n c e d . In one case the p r o g e s t e r o n e l e v e l s r e m a i n e d c o n s t a n t , T h i s p a t i e n t d i d n o t r e s p o n d a t a l l , no u t e r i n e contractions were recorded. The
abortion was finally performed
by d i l a t a t i o n and c u r e t t a g e ,

In the 2. p a t i e n t a b o r t i o n w a s induced and c o m p l e t e d by d i l a t a t i o n and c u r e t t a g e , T h e s l i g h t l y e l e v a t e d p r o g e s t e r o n e l e v e l s in t h e p a t i e n t t r e a t e d w i t h c u r e t t a g e m i g h t be due t o t h e f u n c t i o n o f the r e g r e s s i n g c o r p u s l u t e u m g r a v i d i t a t i s .

DISCUSSION
T h e data reported in this paper indicate that P G F2~ exerts a luteol y t i c e f f e c t on the n o r m a l c o r p u s l u t e u m m e n s t r u a t i o n s and g r a v i d i t a t i s in the h u m a n . L u t e o t y s i s a c h i e v e d by p r o s t a g l a n d i n s has been r e p o r t e d in o t h e r s p e c i e s ( P H A R R I S and VVYNGARDEN, K I R T O N et al., McORACKEN
et a t . ) . On the o t h e r hand p r o s t a g l a n d i n s have a
p r o n o u n c e d s t i m u l a t i n g e f f e c t on u t e r i n e c o n t r a c t i l i t y in v i v o K A R M I N et a t . and in v i t r o S A N D B E R G et a l . T h e i n d u c t i o n o f a b o r t i o n is the consequence o f s t i m u l a t e d u t e r i n e c o n t r a c t i l i t y . T h e r a p i d l y d e c r e a s i n g p l a s m a p r o g e s t e r o n e l e v e l s have to be c o n s i d e r e d as
