Eleven buffalo heifers of 24 months of age were superovulated using pregnant mares serum gonadotrophin (PNSG 2500 I .U. ; Folligon, Intervet). Blood samples were collected daily before and after induced cycle with frequent samplings around the day of estrus, for quantitation of prolactin using standard RIA procedure. The reproductive cyclicity and luteal function was evaluated from progesterone concentrations in blood. The plasma prolactin Levels before and after the first PGF2 alpha administration (synchronization) were similar indicating that the prostaglandins had no effect on plasma prolactin. The pre-PMSG ptolactin level in heifers was 112.61 + 6.97 ng/ml which rose so 236.33 + 48.36 ngfml a day before %duced estrus and ranged between 791.30 + 33.51 The to 247.40 f 24.76 nglml on the day of induced estrui. levels deciined to 160.39 + 25.12 rig/all on succeeding days. Animals exhibited a mean follicular response of 2.67 + 0.88 and 2.33 2 0.67 follicles and a mean ovulatory response of 1.33 + 0.88 and 1.33 + 0.67 ovulation in the right and left ovary, respectively. Individually, animals which had higher prolaction post superovulation had a lower ovulatory response. Though PMSGresponses among peri-pubertal buffaloes led to follicular development and ovulation but hyperprolactinemia seems to hamper either formation of normal corpus luteum or interfered in the secretion of progesterone from newly formed luteal tissue.
