to that of a single porosity medium, the other which exhibits memory effects, attributable to seepage through the micropores.
Preliminary results are presented of constant head permeability tests on dry, confined, compacted bentonite clays. On wetting or with increasing hydraulic gradient, the clays develop a swelling pressure. Some clays appear to show a critical gradient or pressure, below which water flow will not occur. Once the apparent critical gradient is exceeded, water flow occurs and it continues if the gradient is subsequently reduced below the initial critical value. Implications to clays used as radioactive waste vault buffer materials are examined.

935170 Rockfill placement and compaction guidelines Breitenbach, A J Geotech Test J V16. N1, March 1993, P76-84 General guidelines for rockfill placement and compaction are proposed based on experiences gained from several large rockfill dams. Information has been acquired from construction of test fills using procedures developed in the 1960s by the US Corps of Engineers and updated for today's compaction equipment. Borrow selection and development, lift thickness, roller passes, gradation, moisture conditioning, and overbuild are discussed.
935171 Method for the determination of coefficient of consolidation. Technical note Sridharan, A; Prakash, K Geotech Test J V16, N1, March 1993, P131-134 A convenient curve-fitting method of obtaining the coefficient of consolidation can be developed when Terzaghi's U-T (degree of consolidation-time factor) relation is plotted as T against T/U. An improved method of interpretation, similar to the square root of time-fitting method is proposed, based on plot of compression of a consolidating layer against time/compression. Better and easier estimates of the 90% consolidation point are possible.
935172 Plate-load tests of collapsible soils. Technical note Reznik, Y M J Geotech Engng Div A S C E VlI9, N3, March 1993, P608615 In situ plate load tests provide some of the most reliable data for foundation design. Tests on collapsible loesses and loessial loams in the Ukraine are described. Correlations between collapse potentials estabished in the field and in various laboratory tests are discussed. Factors to be considered when applying laboratory and field collapsibility data to foundation design are examined.
935173 Deformable porous media with double porosity. Quusi-statics. II: Memory effects Auriault, J L; Boutic, C Trans Porous Media VIO, N2, Feb 1993, P153-169 The macroscopic steady state description of a porous medium with pores and fractures is investigated using a homogenization technique. The description is, as expected, sensitive to the ratios between the different scales (characteristic lengths of pores, fractures and the macroscopic medium). Two particular cases are examined, one which gives a macroscopic description
An effective stress analysis is presented of end bearing gravel piles in soft soils and supporting a rigid platform. Consolidation, load transfer between components of the system, and settlements which occur continuously throughout the loading history are taken into account. The analysis focuses on velocity of the soil particles during the loading process, and once this has been determined, other pertinent quantities can be evaluated. An efficient computation scheme is developed. Initial results are illustrated. 935175 Pore pressure dissipation and settlements of soft deposits under embankment loads Younger, J S Proc Ninth Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Bangkok, 9-13 December 1991 VI, P359-363. Publ Thailand: Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society, 1991 Pore pressure dissipation and settlement as a result of surface loading have been monitored for Bandung (freshwater) and Surabaya (marine) clays in Indonesia. Results are discussed together with those from a well documented site of marine clay at Muar, Malaysia. Differences in bchaviour are examined bearing in mind the different geological histories of the materials, and relevant consolidation parameters are determined. Pore pressure dissipation analysis was by a 2D alternating directional implicit finite difference approach on layered soil profile models. 935176 Engineering characteristics and evaluation of Chengdu Clay, China Sen, S Proc 26th Annual Conference of the Engineering Group of the Geological Society, The Engineering Geology o f Weak Rock, Leeds, 9-13 September 1990 P65-69. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1993 (Engineering Geology Special Publication No. 8) Engineering geological and mechanical properties of Chengdu clay from Sichuan province have been investigated. The material is overconsolidated,of low permeability, and is prone to shrinkage and swelling. The moisture content-volume change properties of this material necessitate care be taken in construction and design of foundations. Methods used to overcome foundation settlement/heave problems are summarised. 935177 Shale swelling at elevated temperature and pressure Chenevert, M E; Osisanya, S O Proe 33rd US Symposium on Rock Mechanics, Santa Fe, 3-5 June 1992 P869-878. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1992 A model based on thermodynamics and laboratory derived data is presented for swelling of Wellington shale in contact with water at elevated temperature and pressure.
