Gaypa has benefited from technical collaboration with Holland Colours ever since it moved to its current production site at Quinto Vicentino (35 km northwest of Padova) in 2007. The company now has 15 extrusion lines, producing up to 3200 tonnes/y of masterbatches. It has a workforce of 55 employees. Last year, Gaypa reported sales revenue of €11 M, derived from over 350 customers. Poland: Clariant/Colex – masterbatch Colex Spolka will spend more than Zloty 38 M (or €9 M) to establish a new 4000 tonnes/y colour masterbatch plant on a 1.6 hectares site in the Konstantynow Lodzki special economic zone on the outskirts of Lodz in central Poland. The plant will employ more than 90 people. Colex Spolka became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Clariant last year, after 14 years as a majority-owned subsidiary within the Clariant group. Russia & Germany: Omsk Techuglerod – carbon black Omsk Techuglerod LLC, one of the world’s top ten carbon black producers, is committed to investing up to €300 M to build a new West European logistics centre in the province of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The precise location has not yet been identified. The centre will include a sales office and a laboratory, as well as warehousing facilities to accommodate up to 2000 tonnes of carbon black products. Annual throughput is expected to be of the order of 70,000 tonnes. The centre will be operated by a wholly-owned subsidiary, Omsk Carbon GmbH, with a workforce of about 30 people. Omsk Techuglerod offers more than 30 different grades of carbon black. Its total capacity from two plants is 360,000 tonnes/y. The larger of the two plants is located at Omsk in southwestern Siberia (2700 km east of Moscow). The second plant is at

Volgograd (970 km southeast of Moscow). Altogether, the company generated sales revenue of €300 M in 2011 and it employed 1600 people. It counts most of the major tyre producers among its customers, including Michelin, Continental Gummi, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Pirelli. Customers in the pigments and masterbatch sectors include Harold Scholz GmbH and Ampacet. In the first four months of 2012, Omsk Techuglerod produced 109,000 tonnes of carbon black, representing an 8.5% increase on the equivalent period of 2011. The Omsk plant contributed 78,200 tonnes to this total, the Volgograd plant contributed 30,800 tonnes. South Africa: PolyOne – plastics colorants PolyOne is poised to open a new sales office and colour laboratory in the Montague Gardens industrial precinct on the northeastern outskirts of Cape Town. The new facility will supply liquid colorants, additives and dosing equipment as well as offering rapid colour development services and other types of technical support to customers, especially manufacturers of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers for personal care and beverage applications. The emphasis will be on products and technology developed by ColorMatrix, which was acquired by PolyOne towards the end of last year. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Feb 2012, 6). Sri Lanka: LAUGFS – TiO2 LAUGFS Holdings (of Colombo) will establish a 10,000 tonnes/y sulfateroute TiO2 pigment plant at Mabima, near the Sapugaskanda oil refinery (about 10 km northeast of Colombo). Ilmenite feedstock for the plant will be supplied from Lanka Mineral Sands’

Pulmoddai mines on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka. LAUGFS is one of the country’s largest conglomerates, involved in petrol retailing, natural gas distribution, rubber, tea, restaurants and supermarkets. Mr Wegapitiya (Chairman) has made it clear that he wants to increase the value-added content of exports from Sri Lanka. United Arab Emirates: Takreer – carbon black Takreer (aka Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Co) has awarded a lump-sum turnkey contract to Samsung Engineering to provide project management services for a new carbon black plant and a delayed coker unit at Ruwais. The contract is worth $2.48 bn and it is the eighth contract that Samsung Engineering has received from a company within the Abu Dhabi National Oil Corp (Adnoc) group. The turnkey contract will cover engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning. The new plants should be operational by the end of December 2015. Samsung reports that the capacity of the carbon black plant will be only 30,000 tonnes/y. Towards the end of last year, Eurotecnica (of Milan) reported that it had been awarded a contract for design and engineering of a 100,000 tonnes/y carbon black plant to be built at Takreer’s Ruwais complex. (See ‘Focus n Pigments’, Jan 2012, 5). It is not yet clear whether the Samsung project is additional to or a replacement for the Eurotecnica project.
