The Marine Pollution Bulletin is published monthly and sets out to cover all aspects of the fight for the life of lakes, estuaries, seas and oceans. It includes news, comment, reviews and research reports not only on the threats of noxious substances to marine life but also on the management and productivity of the marine environment in general. It publishes accounts of new and proposed research programmes as well as the results of those in progress. Contributions may be in the form of short notes not exceeding 650 words or articles of 1500-2000 words and should be submitted to the editor in double-spaced typescript. They should be given a short one-line title and the text should be broken by short sub-headings. All measurements must be given in metric (S.I.) units. Reprints of articles can be supplied after publication and an order form for them is sent to contributors. Bulk orders of copies of the entire issue in which an article appears can be supplied at a reduced rate to the author, provided they are ordered in advance of publication.

that some of the latter are poorly reproduced (especially Fig. 98). Perhaps the style and content of the chapters ~)n specialist topics should have been standardized for easier reference, otherwise the book is well written and undoubtedly will have wide appeal; in view of this its high price is regrettable. Environmental Filmstrip Water Pollution (Part II). The control of water pollution; the effects o] marine pollution. Notes to accompany filmstrip DW148 (Diana Wyllie Ltd, London). £3.00 Ecology and environment are now booming subjects in schools and this is one of a series of filmstrips produced by Diana Wyllie to provide illustrative matter for them. Part I and the first 23 slides of Part II on water pollution are concerned with the sources, effects and treatment of inland water pollution. The remaining 17 slides deal with marine pollution. Unfortunately, except for oil, pollution of the sea is not very photogenic so that what can be presented visually is very limited and, good though the filmstrips may be in other respects, their treatment of marine pollution is one-sided. Essentially they treat any sewage

pollution, oil, the effect of organic pollution in estuaries and a little on sampling methods. The quality of the slides varies quite widely and one or two should be replaced at the earliest opportunity. The accompanying notes by Ian Waddington are straightforward and generally accurate (although one could cavil at one or two points). The inevitable limitation imposed by the visual medium, however, is a major stumbling block and anyone using this set as a teaching aid would find the slides and notes little help in dealing with matters such as heavy metal pollution or the dangers of hazardous cargoes which have been in the forefront of the news recently. Pollutant Dispersal The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has organized a Symposium on 'The Physical Processes Responsible for the Dispersal of Pollutants in the Sea, with special reference to the nearshore zone'. This will be held at Aarhus University, Denmark on 4-7 July 1972, The symposium will be concerned largely with physical processes involved in the dispersal of oil spreading on the surface of the sea, solubles and suspended matter. Transport of material as bottom sediment will be excluded. Further information can be obtained from the General Secretary, ICES, Charlottenlund Slot, DK-2920 Charlottenlund, Denmark.

Modelling Estuaries The Water Pollution Research Laboratory has organized a Symposium on 18-19 April 1972 on Mathematical and Hydraulic Modelling of Estuarine Pollution. It is designed primarily for those working on mathematical representation of estuarine pollution. Further information can be obtained from the Director, Water Pollution Research Laboratory, Stevenage, Herts SGI 1TH. UK.

Estuarine Energetics A one-day symposium on Productivity and Energetics of Shallow Marine and Estuarine Systems has been organized jointly by the new Estuarine and Brackishwater Biological Association and the Energy and Production Ecology Group of the British Ecological Society. It will be held on 14th April 1972 at the University of York, Heslington, York. Further information can be obtained from Dr R. S. K. Barnes, Brackenly, Forest Lane, Hardley, Southampton SO4 6NN.

Marine Industry and Pollution The International Association for Pollution Control has organized the Second Annual Conference on Pollution Control and the Marine Industry to be held on 11-12 May 1972 at the Shoreham Hotel, Washington, DC. The purpose of the conference is to provide vessel owners and operators, port authorities, oil drillers, manufacturers and legislators with a total view of all the present and proposed activities in the field of marine pollution control. Further information can be obtained from Thomas Sullivan, IAPC, 4,733 Bethesda Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20014.
