Polymer Electrolyte Reviews--1. Edited by J. R. MacCallum and C. A. Vincent, Elsevier Applied Science, London, 1987, x + 351 pp, price £48.00. Polymer electrolytes provide one of the advancing areas for application of polymer systems and an interesting borderline subject for research, linking polymer chemistry with electrochemistry. The topic has grown to major importance in the last fifteen years and the inception of a series of reviews (edited by a polymer chemist and an electrochemist) to increase current awareness is therefore timely. The format is rather similar to the same publishers' 'Developments' series of books, which fulfil a similar function in other areas. This first volume contains ten articles, contributed by active researchers in the field. The emphasis is, as would be expected, on poly(ethylene oxide) based systems: the various topics include an overview of the current state of PEO-based electrolyte, several contributions on the conductivity of PEO and related systems, including networks, transport theory, electrical measurements, characterisation, electrode kinetics and electrochemical cells. The range of topics is such as will provide a good introduction to the subject and will stimulate further interest and research. The only minor criticism is that there is no initial synopsis at the start of each article to indicate the content, which many readers would have found useful on first acquaintance with the book.
