Popliteal Artery Occlusion Caused by Entrapment Syndrome in a Female Long Distance Runner S. Regus *, W. Lang University Hospital, Krankenhausstrasse 12, 91054 Erlangen, Germany

A 47 year old female long distance runner complained of exercise induced right leg pain. As her symptoms were worsening despite conservative treatment of suspected musculoskeletal disorders, magnetic resonance angiography was undertaken, which indicated popliteal artery (PA) occlusion. Following open popliteal exploration and resection of an anomalous musculotendinous bundle (representing PA entrapment syndrome type III), PA endarterectomy was performed. Final reconstruction of the affected artery was undertaken using a vein patch. Even in highly trained endurance athletes without cardiovascular risk factors, arterial lesions could be responsible for lower limb pain.
