DDUCTNEWS Portable,, pilot plant centrifuge saves installation time The Western States Machine C o m p a n y h as i n t r o d u c e d what it claims is an innovative concept in the field of small-scale industrial centrifuge production: the new, portable pilot-plant centrifuge. This free-standing, selfcontained unit is a complete pilot plant or testing centrifuge system. The semi-automatic centrifuge is shipped completely assembled and ready to o p e r a t e . E a c h u n i t is e q u i p p e d with a Western States EZ model batch centrifuge, which is mounted on a single base which splits into two skid-size units for ease in transportation. Also included is a hydraulic drive unit, DNP Neutronic oxygen a n a l y s e r an d e x p l o s i o n proof controls. The compact and versatile unit saves up to 300 hours in installation. Th e t o p - a c c e s s , f u ll y opening cover design of the EZ model batch centrifuge makes the portable pilot plant centrifuge simple to load, unload and inspect.
The low profile provides ease in basket removal for fast clean-up. A standard hydraulic drive provides stepless acceleration and deceleration. Fume- and p r e s s u r e - t i g h t covers are s t a n d a r d with oxygen analyser units. Explosion-proof controls are Class I, Division I, Group C&D. All u n i t s are constructed from quality alloys a n d / o r coatings, and factorytested before shipping. Western States centrifuge models EZ-068 through EZ-120 may be mounted. Basket sizes range from 26 x 12 to 30 × 18 inches. Electric a n d / o r Tork-Master T M variable frequency drives are also available in place of the standard hydraulic drive, and c l e a n - i n - p l a c e nozzles can be provided.

High-flow Teflon filter cartridges Millipore has introduced a new Fluorogard ATX cartridge filter to m e e t th e high filtration requirements of 8-inch wafer fabrication. Constructed throughout of Teflon materials, these filters are designed to efficiently remove particles f r o m a b r o a d r a n g e of acids, bases, solvents and other microelectronic process chemicals. Fluorogard ATX incorpor a t es a p p r o x i m a t e l y 50% more filtration surface area than typical 10-inch pleated cartridge filters; this results in nearly double the filter flow rate performance, allowing users the option of the 10-inch Fluorogard ATX in place of a 20-inch pleated filter. Upgrades to Fluorogard ATX filters do not require new housings. The filters are constructed entirely of PTFE 102
membrane and PFA 440 HP pleated supports, which provide exceptional chemical compatibility. The Teflon m a t e r i a l s and t h e r m a l l y bonded construction minimise extractables, and the PFA p l e a t e d u p s t r e a m / downstream s u p p o r t s are designed to minimize pressure drop. The car t r i d g e filters are available in 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 ~m pore size r a t i n g s to p r o v i d e f i n er filtration and reliable particle retention.
Flex Flap 2 dust-suppression system The h a n d l i n g and transshipment of bulk material frequently generates a dust problem. Whenever the material is d r o p p e d into a hopper or pit, dust clouds are generated and cause a nuisance to the environment. Until recently, control of t h ese s i t u a t i o n s r e q u i r e d vast, e x p e n s i v e i n s t a l l a tions to exhaust and clean large air volumes. DCE designs, m a n u f a c t u r e s and markets dust-control equipment which solves the dust problem effectively and efficiently, at considerably reduced cost. The construction of the Flex Flap dust suppression system is simple and ingenious. Steel plates are located at an angle in the receiving hopper, with the Flex Flaps vertically suspended between them; the Flex Flaps are made from abrasion-resistant, weather-
proof material. Under the pressure of the falling prod u c t t h e Flex Flaps are m o v e d a s i d e to l e t t h e product through, and the velocity of the downd r a u g h t c r e a t e d by t h e dust-control equipment prevents the dust from escaping. Dust floating in the hopper is evacuated to a DCE fabric collector. The c o m b i n a t i o n of a Flex Flap 2 system with a DCE collector results in a low-cost system with a short payback period. The emission requirements are met by the use of dust-control installations considerably reduced in size, with a lower filtration surface, and with smaller fans consuming far less energy.
