Radiometer/Photometer System Measures Visible and Radiometric Light A versatile new combination radiometer/photometer system that can quantify measurements in both visible

and radiometric light units and provide direct readings is being introduced by International Light Inc. of Newbury Port, Massachusetts, USA. The IL1715 Research Radiometer/Photometer System operates over a broad dynamic range and is calibrated to provide direct readings in watts/cm 2 and lux. Consisting of an ILl710 Research Radiometer with a SED033 silicon detector, W diffuser, plus interchangeable Y photopic and F flat response filters, this versatile system quantifies measurements in specific light units. Eliminating the separate meters and detectors which are typically required for making measurements in both vislble and radiometric light units, the IL1715 Research Radiometer/Photometer System operates over an 8.5 decade dynamic range above 1 nW/cm 2 and 5 milli-lux. Standard features include automatic zeroing, auto range, constant memory, RS232C plus TTL outputs and a printer. The IL1715 Research Radiometer/Photometer System is supplied complete with the instrument, detector, diffuser, filters, printer and carrying case. Literature is available upon request.

Portable Radioactivity Meter Aber Technical Sales UK have developed a hand-held radioactivity measuring instrument, the GEM 100, designed to measure alpha- and beta-emitting sample activities and for checking for radioactive contamination in most situations where radioactive materials are found. In addition to the usual ratemeter the device features a scaler. For weaker sources the wide range of timing intervals allows measurement and accuracy to be increased if required. There is a detector probe which

enhances use in a confined space or where contamination is being searched for. A 50 mm diameter window of weight less than 2 mg cm -2 is incorporated in the high sensitivity Geiger-Muller tube. As there is low power circuitry this ensures long battery lifetime.

The Pocket pH Meter A new pocket pH meter, the 704 pH Meter made by Metrohm in Switzerland has been designed carefully for practical usage. The operation is simple and convenient. It has automatic buffer recognition which only requires two key strokes and calibration data and instrument settings remain stored even when the battery has to be removed for changing. The following resolutions can be obtained: pH 0.01, temperature 0.1°C and voltage 1 mV. Measurements are automatically temperature compensated by the use of a Pt 1000 temperature sensor which is either integrated or connected externally. An integrated 'scratchpad' can store up to nine pairs of measured values for redisplay later. This feature is particularly useful in dark conditions, such as cellars or tunnels and in field work especially when weather conditions are bad. The keypad has a chemically resistant membrane with sprayproof housing as well as a good electrical shield. A case able to carry all solutions and equipment is included with the meter.

programmable and has very fast moving speed of the monochromators (18 000 nm rain -1) it is possible to switch very quickly between excitation and emission wavelengths. A new feature is the incorporation of the scanning fluorescence spectra and the subtracting of background spectra. Excitation and emission can be measured at 15 nm spectral bandwidths between 220 nm and 750 nm. The two sets of measuring parameters and time programs are stored and backed up with batteries. The detector can also be controlled via a PC or integrator as it has a serial interface RS-232C installed.

New Portable Turbidimeter The convenience of on-site turbidity testing while still retaining laboratory accuracy is offered by the new 2100 P Portable Turbidimeter from Hach Europe, Belgium. It is lightweight and battery operated with 01000 NTU measurement, digital display with automatic decimal point placement and simplified calibration. It works on the nephelometric principle where light scattered at 90 ° from particles in the sample are measured. It has a selectable measurement range and the results are directly displayed in Nephelometric Turbidity Units.

Oil/Water Interface Probe Sensitive Detection of PAH in the Picogram Level Shimadzu Europa GmbH of Duisberg, Germany have produced a programmable fluorescence detector RF551 which enables the reliable and reproducible analysis of the 16 relevant PAH down to the picogram level in environmental samples. Solinst Canada Ltd has developed a strong probe which measures the level and thickness of floating petroleum products and non-aqueous hydrocarbons, such as solvents, in wells. It is simple to operate, easy to clean and decontaminate. It has also been approved as safe for use in hazardous locations by CSA. It is available in any length from 15 m upwards and is stored on a freestanding reel incorporating a carrying handle.
