DESALINATION • Abengoa has signed a contract to develop a desalination and irrigation project in the Agadir region of Morocco. The project, valued at E309 million, involves the construction of a desalination plant with a 275 000 m3 total production capacity of desalinated water per day for domestic and irrigation use. It also provides for a possible capacity expansion of up to 450 000 m3/day.

MINING • Fluor Corp has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Saudi Arabian Mining Co (Ma’aden) to support future Ma’aden projects located within and outside Saudi Arabia. Under the MOU, Fluor would be considered for conceptual; pre-front-end engineering and design (FEED); FEED; engineering, procurement and construction management; and program management contracting services for future projects.

OIL & GAS • Suez is to upgrade and extend the effluent treatment plant at the National Refining Co’s (Sonara) refinery in Limbé, Cameroon. The E22 million contract was awarded to a consortium comprising Suez, Sogea Satom and Ingenica. It is Suez’s first venture in treating effluents from the refining industry in sub-Saharan Africa.

PETROCHEMICALS • LyondellBasell has made the final investment decision to build the world’s largest propylene oxide (PO) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) plant at its Channelview Complex in Texas, USA. The US$2.4 billion project is the company’s single largest capital investment to date. When completed, the plant will produce 1 billion pounds of PO and 2.2 billion pounds of TBA annually. The PO/TBA project is part of LyondellBasell’s US$5 billion organic growth program on the US Gulf Coast.

PHARMACEUTICALS • BASF is planning to build a new world-scale plant to produce ibuprofen in Ludwigshafen,

Germany. The new facility, which will be the first world-scale ibuprofen plant in Europe, is scheduled to come onstream in 2021. BASF is also expanding its ibuprofen capacity at its production site in Bishop, Texas, USA by early 2018. BASF is investing approximately E200 million in the two projects.

POWER GENERATION • A consortium of Marubeni Corp, General Electric and PT Hutama Karya (HK) has been awarded a ¥41 billion EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract for PT Indonesia Power’s Tambak Lorok Combined Cycle Power Plant Block 3 Project in Indonesia. The 780 MW power plant in Semarang, Central Java will be the largest power project developed by Indonesia Power. It is expected to be completed in 2020.

WATER & WASTEWATER • Acciona Agua has started operating the upstream water supply infrastructure in New Cairo, a satellite city about 30 km east of the Egyptian capital. The process includes taking water from the River Nile, piping it to the 500 000 m3/day New Cairo drinking water treatment plant, processing it and then storing the water for distribution to end users. The piping system, with a capacity to carry 1 million m3 per day, comprises two 42-km water mains each with a diameter of 2.6 m, and four pumping stations. The four-year contract is worth about E35 million. • Singapore’s national water agency PUB has signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) with Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corp (SWCC) and Western Australia’s Water Corp promoting collaboration in areas including water supply and innovation. PUB’s MOU with the SWCC is designed to support relations between the Singapore and Saudi Arabia governments, and facilitate knowledge exchange in water supply, water network management and innovation. This includes areas such as desalination technology, energy reduction, water management systems (SCADA), leak detection, nonrevenue water, and automated metering. The MOU with Water Corp will promote cooperation and collaboration in urban water supply, wastewater management and innovation.
