PPG Publishes New Architectural Powder Coatings Guide PPG announced its coil and building products business has published the Architectural Powder Coatings Color Guide, a six-page brochure featuring 60 commonly specified CORAFLON1 powder coatings colors. The booklet is organized into three sections: 30 solid colors, 21 Coraflon SUNSTORM1 mica colors and nine specialty colors, including textured, multi-color and anodic-look samples. The guide provides a reference chart that lists all four PPG architectural powder coatings brands—DURANAR1, Coraflon, ENVIROCRON1 04 and Envirocron 03 coatings. Included are their American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) specification, resin quality, coating layer requirements, seacoast warranty coverage and appearance characteristics. Also featured are descriptions of these product lines, including typical applications, and information about PPG’s global color and styling services.

Huntsman-Clariant Present First Update on Merger Clariant (Muttenz, Switzerland) and Huntsman International LLC (The Woodlands, Texas) recently presented the first merger update for shareholders. Huntsman also recently announced a subsidiary company’s IPO. The merger is proceeding as planned, with continuing signs of strong progress toward the slated closing date, which is projected for December 2017 or January 2018. For the foreseeable future, both companies have agreed to a joint strategic direction in order to create short- and longterm value. This will be based in a focus on higher growth, as well as higher margin businesses. There will also be steps taken to ensure organic sales revenue growth of 2 percent p.a. at approximately 20 percent EBITDA margin, with synergies totaling to an excess of $400 million as well as $25 million in terms of a tax saving target. Complementary benefits will come as a result of the companies’ performance products, care chemicals and natural resources. In total, these represent roughly 35 percent of the combined sales for HuntsmanClariant, as well as a broad

surfactants portfolio. Both companies have similar EBITDA margins at 17.2 percent, including synergies. For both companies, the majority of future investments will be geared toward growth. As for other plans, formulation- and application-based segment niches will be expanded upon, along with bespoke polyurethane systems, high-end composites and customer-oriented products. Huntsman announced last week that subsidiary company Venator Materials PLC has launched its initial public offering and will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange this month. According to the Houston Chronicle, the IPO for the new pigments business totals nearly $500 million.

TECHNOLOGY Axalta adds new grade to its hightemperature resistant internal pipe coatings line Axalta Coating Systems has introduced the latest addition to its high-temperature, corrosion-resistant internal pipe coatings with the release of Nap-Gard 7-0016. It is a thermosetting epoxy powder that is designed to provide excellent chemical resistance in temperatures up to 150 degC (302 degF). Axalta’s new generation of high-temperature coatings offer a low-cost alternative to protect the internal diameter of the world’s pipelines. Nap-Gard collection of powder coatings are used on external and internal oil, gas and water pipelines with single, dual and multi-layer application options. Nap-Gard also provides corrosion protection solutions that can be used to coat valves, fittings and rebar.

Coatings innovations on display in Germany A number of companies presented their innovative products at the European Coatings Show on 4-6 Apr 2017 in Nuremberg, Germany. At Lanxess’ stand, the company highlighted its Bayferrox iron oxide pigments, which is produced at its facility in Ningbo, China. The firm is planning to boost its iron oxide pigments capacity to about 23,000 tonnes by 2019,
COATINGS with expansion projects at its sites in Porto Feliz (Brazil) and Krefeld-Uedingen (Germany). Separately, Perstorp launched Curalite line of cationic UV curing boosters. The range accelerates reactivity by 15 times, resulting in higher line speeds. The company also featured its renewable Penta Voxtar and Charmor line of intumescent paints. At the event, DSM presented Decovery plant-based resin and Iridea Bio renewable resins, while Merck featured a Rolls-Royce coated with a special effect pigment. Merck also highlighted the most recent addition to its Xirallic NXT range Cougar Red. It also showed the fourth pigment under its Meoxal line that will be available in late 2017. Furthermore, Merck unveiled the new Tivida FL3000 non-ionic fluorosurfactant. Huntsman introduced its Ara Cool line of low temperature curing agents. Other exhibitors at the event are Songwon Industrial Co Ltd, which presented its most recent high performance products; and Sun Chemical Performance Pigments, which launched its Sunbrite Yellow 74 high-performing pigment. Sun Chemical also introduced Quindo Magenta 202 pigment.

Cornelius to deliver extender products as a replacement for TiO2 Cornelius Group has collaborated to deliver two extender product solutions to market in the wake of the titanium dioxide (TiO2) shortage. The company has partnered with VB Technochemicals SA to offer VB White, which is suitable for the masterbatch market, and Huber Engineered Materials to provide Zeolex 330 to the paint and coatings market. Huber Engineered Materials’ Zeolex 330 is an amorphous sodium aluminosilicate powder for paint and coatings applications. It acts as a gloss sheen control agent. It provides high levels of opacity, whiteness and brightness as well as outstanding flatting and scrubresistance for interior architectural formulations.
