Changes have been made in chapters describing the commercially available flow cytometers and listing the sources of supply. Furthermore, six chapters presenting in detail the consecutive stages of building a self-made apparatus have been merged into one. Finally the subject index has been enlarged and the quality of print and of the hand-drawn illustrations markedly improved. The author was apparently encouraged by the sales of the first edition of this book (2500 copies as revealed in his preface). It is noteworthy that in the meantime he has established his own commercial enterprise for the manufacture of flow cytometers. Nonetheless, as evidenced here, he still advocates and propagates the idea of using selfbuilt instruments.

Liss, New York, 1988. $59.50, ISBN 0-8451-4254-2 The first edition of this voluminous text book, published in 1985 (reviewed in this journal Vol. 90, no. 1), showed how to make flow cytometry more accessible by using instruments independently constructed from relatively inexpensive parts. The new edition is designed to serve the same purpose by somewhat augmented means. It has 56 more pages but the same folio format and is written in the same, conversational style. The introductory chapters and the historical account of cytometry are essentially unchanged, whereas the description of the different components of the apparatus and their operation, the discussion of
