European H2ME project reaches key milestone

T

he Hydrogen Mobility Europe (H2ME) initiative has announced the latest progress in its drive to accelerate hydrogen powered mobility. The panEuropean project has now deployed almost 500 fuel cell electric vehicles and 30 hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) across Germany, France, Scandinavia, the UK, and other European countries. These vehicles have now accumulated more than 8 million km (5 million miles) since the project began in 2015, with over 5 million km (3.1 million miles) travelled in 2018 alone. H2ME findings and conclusions will be shared at the Hydrogen for Clean Transport mid-term conference in Hamburg, Germany on 25 October [see the Events Calendar]. The E170 million (US$189 million) H2ME demonstration – co-funded with E67 million ($74 million) from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) [see also page 12] – aims to support the commercialisation of fuel cell and hydrogen

technologies in Europe [see the News Feature in FCB, October 2015, and June 2016, p1]. As well as creating the world’s largest network of hydrogen stations, it is sharing best practice and standards between the 43 partners, and helping to develop attractive ownership models in use cases such as taxis, captive fleets, and in cities with strict environmental targets. In total, the project will deploy 49 hydrogen stations and 1400 fuel cell cars and vans by 2022. The results generated by the project are being shared with industry, politicians, and the wider public to support the wider adoption of hydrogen mobility. As part of this, the Hydrogen for Clean Transport conference will showcase the advances made by hydrogen technology in the transport sector, and discuss the remaining challenges in working towards widespread commercialisation. Hydrogen vehicles will be driven to the event from across Europe. F

rench company Pragma Industries has increased the maximum range of its hydrogen fuel cell powered bike by 50%, using an advanced, high-pressure gas cylinder from UK-based AMS Composite Cylinders. A fleet of Alpha fuel cell bikes has been supplied to provide sustainable transport at the 45th G7 Summit in Biarritz, France in late August. Originally launched in 2018, the Alpha is the world’s first commercially available hydrogen fuel cell bike. It rides like an ordinary bicycle with electric power boost (pedelec), for private owners as well as commercial applications such as public services, last-mile delivery, municipal bike schemes, and corporate staff mobility. Earlier this year Engie Cofely signed a commercial

partnership with Pragma for 200 hydrogen fuel cell bicycles [FCB, May 2019, p1]. As part of the Engie-funded project, 200 Alpha bikes will be available to journalists throughout the 45th G7 Summit in Biarritz, from 24–26 August. Afterwards the bikes will be made available for long-term rental across the city, as a regional eco-transport legacy. Replacing the original 200 bar gas cylinders with AMS’s ultra-lightweight, non-limited life, 300 bar carbon composite gas cylinders has allowed Pragma to extend the Alpha’s maximum range from 100 km (62 miles) to 150 km (93 miles) – much longer than the 50 km (31 miles) offered by typical battery powered bikes.
