Pre-clinical Complete Denture Prosthodontics. By John L. Shannon, B.A., D.D.S., M.Sc. Columbus, 1973, The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry Press. 252 pages, illustrated. Price $25.00. Pre-clinical Complete Denture Prosthodontics is a self-instructional manual created to enable a student-dentist to progress more rapidly through courses in complete denture prosthodontics at the College of Dentistry, The Ohio State University. It is designed so that a studentdentist can construct complete dentures on a manikin with only limited supervision. The subject matter is presented in an easy-to-follow cookbook style. It is organized in a logical, sequential order for both clinical and laboratory procedures that are undertaken in the treatment of patients with complete dentures. The student-dentist’s understanding of “what,” “how,” and “when” is enhanced by referenced supplemental information contained in or demonstrated by assigned reading in the latest edition of Swenson’s Complete Dentures, slide tapes, and 610 numbered color transparencies reproduced on 13 microfiche (5% x 4 inch) transparencies. A viewer is required for the microfiche transparencies which, incidentally, are of excellent quality. Thirty line-type illustrations are contained in the manual, and they are most adequate. Pages are typewritten and probably reproduced by electrostatic stencil. Although this reviewer would prefer a greater contrast type of printing than that of the manual reviewed, it is quite readable and reproduced on a good grade of paper. For the most part, printing has been confined to the left-hand pages of the manual, innovatively leaving the right-hand pages for making notes. The manual has a cardboard-type cover and is edge bound. Provision has been made so that the manual may be placed in a three-ring notebook. The subject matter ranges from preliminary impressions to remounting the processed dentures by interocclusal records to correct occlusal discrepancies of various causes. Objectives and definitive procedural instructions are stated, and all required supplies, materials, and equipment for each procedure are listed. Criterion examinations appear at logical intervals. This manual should most effectively accomplish the purpose for which it was created. It will admirably serve as a clinical guide for predoctoral student-dentists and as a refresher course for practicing dentists. This text is a meaningful contribution in this reviewer’s opinion.
