Pre-eclampsia in swine flu Viroj Wiwanitkit ⇑ Hainan Medical University, China Faculty of Medicine, University of Nis, Serbia
Sir, swine flu is an important global concern. It is no doubt that there are some obstetrical problems due to swine flu. The interrelationship between swine flu and pre-eclampsia is interesting. Based on available evidences, there are some reports on pre-eclampsia in the patients with swine flu. According to a recent report from Thailand [1], there was 1 from 278 (3.9%) swine flu cases who had pre-eclampsia as a clinical manifestation. Focusing on obstetrical cases, a report from Oaxaca [2] showed the prevalence rate of pre-eclampsia in swine flu cases equaled to 11.1% (3/27). The considerably high rate of pre-eclampsia in swine cases brings attention to the present concern of the obstetrical society. Indeed, the effect of influenza on the course of pregnancy has been focused for many
years. For influenza B, eclampsia is mentioned as a serious associated illness [3]. For the new influenza, swine flu, further studies focusing on the exact pathophysiology of swine flu are recommended.
