PIL|(IS study of light emitting devices and solar cells where it can image dislocations, grain boundaries and trapping centres. The confocal imaging mode gives the optical microscopist a previously unavailable capability. The intrinsic spatial resolution of the confocal image is better than can be obtained conventionally. In the confocal mode the height of surface features can be measured to an accuracy better than 0.1/~m. Other applications include the imaging of features beneath an overlayer without stray reflected light and the production of images of high spatial resolution and extended depth of field. Add-on unit provides mirror finishing of moulds Mirror-finished moulds with angled side walls can be produced without orbital action on Anotronic-Ard EDM machines using an extra power unit interfaced with the standard power supply. The system, known as AMF,

A GZ miniaturized gauging transducer from Sangamo with O. 15 #m repeatability

is claimed to produce a better finish than the orbital mirror finishing system which has led the field in this technology. The system uses a reduced current, very high frequency discharge and does not require spark out and orbit action. Because orbit action is no longer essential, the accuracy of reproduction of the tool shape can be to within the limits of the spark gap, which is 0.0025 mm. Clearly defined edges are preserved at the junctions of flats and curves, and tool life is extended. Anotronic Ltd, 22 Potters Lane, Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes, MK11 3HF, UK

Metrology gauging transducers available from Sangamo provide for linear strokes ranging from +0.25 m m to + 5 mm. With the introduction of the AGZ gauging transducer, a +0.5 mm stroke version is available in shorter body than the corresponding established miniature transducer, but with better mechanical characteristics providing greater flexibility in use. The AGZ miniaturized transducer can be provided with either full Ivdt (AGZ 0.5) or half-bridge (AGZH 0.5) coil windings contained within a body measuring 22.5 mm in length. The body design provides for pretravel adjustment of ___0.5mm without needing to demount the transducer from its fixture. The AGZ also has a replaceable sensing tip and an anti-totational sleeve ensuring high repeatability. Non-repeatability is less than 0.15/~m, with linearly accurate to 0.3% as standard.

The AGZ will interface with all Sangamo conditioning electronics, and also with the System 16 Transducer/Computer Interface and System 256 Programmable Data Analyser. Sangamo Division, SolartTon Transducers, Steyning Way, Southern Cross Industrial Estate, Bognor Regis, West Sussex PO22 9ST, UK
