It includes continuous distributions of infinitesimal dislocations, and predicts non-linear, stress history dependent strain behaviour. Memory effects seen during cyclic stressing of rocks may be explained. The problems posed by the presence of joints or cracks in experimental test specimens are highlighted.

The methods of determining elastic constants of rock as a transversely isotropic medium are considered and experimental tests on carboniferous rocks using uniaxial compression are described. The effect of the degree of anisotropy of elasticity of transversely isotropic rock, and inclination of rock strata, on stress fields around underground openings, differently orientated to the directions of dip and strike of rock strata, is analysed. Stress fields around underground openings in rocks of strong, medium and poor anisotropy of elasticity are evaluated.

Polished stone value (PSV) can be correlated with other properties, Polishing was also evaluated under road conditions and the polishing process examined by scanning electron microscopy. Recommendations are made for suitable materials for road use in terms of PSV and skid resistance.

P365-369 [paper to the International Symposium on Aggregates, Nice, 21-23 May 1984) Pavement microtexture is controlled by aggregate petrography and polishing effects of traffic, macrostructure by aggregate size, compaction during construction and by traffic, mix design and wear. Wet friction is greatest where most water has been expelled and depends on aggregate microtexture. Microtexture can be reduced by polishing or increased by the effects of dust or other contaminants. A series of laboratory tests has been developed to simulate road aggregate wear. Results are presented and the significance of the laboratory testing procedures are discussed.

Both methods work on the same principle and use similar testing devices. Test pieces were prepared and evaluated using an adapted Bohme machine
