dated add overconsolidated clays in triaxlal tests. The nmnber o f cycles to failure, pc~e pressure variation, growth of accmnulated strain, and t h e static strength after cyclic loadimg are predicted by these models and compared with experimental data. 823055 HFAT AND MASS FLOW ASSOCIATED WITH A F R ~ Z I ~ FRONT Holden, J T; Jones, R H; Dud~, S J M E ~ Geol, VI8, NI-~, Dec I~81, P153-16~ (Paper to 2nd Internation~l Symposium on Gro1~d Freezing, TrorEheim, 2~-26 June I ~ 0 ) A ome-a~-~usionsl mathematical model for heat add moisture flow in saturated Ix~ous materials is given. The model is formulated usimg capillary theary amd depends upon the inter-relationship between Ix~e radius, freezing point depression and the cryogenic suction. The conditions at the frost llne include a criterion which determines whether heave and/or penetration of the frost line ocCm~S. ~umeTical results are givem which were computed using an expar~ir~-contractiDg finite-difference apl~oximation. These re~tlts c~npere well with temperature and heave measurements made in the laboratory using a precise freezing cell. Auth.

823056 SEISMIC TECHNIQUES IN THE ~ T O R Y Woods, R D; Her~e, R J Geotech E~g~g Div ASCE, VI07, NGTIO, Oct 1981, P130~1325 Applications of scaled-down seismic cross-hole and stea~v-state Raylei~h wave teats to characterize dynsmic soil properties in labaratcr~ facilities are described. The seismic cross-hole test proved to be most effective in determining ~he spatial add temporal variation of elastic s o i l properties add proved to be a very sensitive ir~licator of a-~] I cha~ges in confining pressure. In addition a sand bin testing facility which is fitted with air bags to provide surface confining pressure and new torsional cross-hole ha~ners are described. 823057 STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF SAND LIqJ~YACTION Fardis, M N; Veneziano, D J Geotech Emg~g Div ASCE, V107, RYgl0, Oct 1981, P1361-1377 A consistent set of stochastic models is developed fc~ the liquefaction resistar~e of a homogeneous mass of sa~d, such as a lab~atcry sample or , ~ 1 1 element of in sltu material. A probabiliatic model fur liquefaction in the labaratcry for undrained simple shear tests is developed first. This model gives the probability distribution of the n~mber of cycles to liquefaction as a function of uniform sheer stress ~,nplitude, mean initial effective stress, and relative density. Corrections are quantified and incorporated into the model. Parameters are estimated from a large number of simple shear test results obtained by eight different groups of researchers using several sands add testiDg techniques. The laboratmry liquefaction model is converted into one applicable in the field. F~nR]ly, the model is generalized to load cycles with nonuniform shear stress amplitude. Describes part of a study to investigate the stability of deep radioactive waste disposal vaults. The dynamic response of an undergroumd opening in discontinuous rock is investigated and the use of the central finite differences method to study the effect of triggering discontinuity failure and the d ~ c rupture of the Joints and faults themselves is described. Results i~iicate that the possibility of extensive rupture depends heavily on the stresses and certain adhesion parameters.

823059 CYCLIC U~DFAIN~D TRYAXIAL STRENG%~{ OF SAMPI2, SAND AFFEcI'~U BY CONFINING PRESSURE. TECHNICAL NOTE Tats%2oka, F; Iwasaki, T; Tokida, K Soils Found, V21, N2, June 1981, PI15-120 To investigate the effects of confining l~essure on the cyclic umdrained triaxial strengths of sauds, for liquefaction potential evaluation, cyclic tmdrained triaxial tests were carried out on intact specimens of sand obtained by two sampling methods. It was foumd that cyclic undrained triaxial strength, expressed by the stress ratio s decreased only slightly with the increase in confining pressure when the laboratory confining pressure was larger than the in situ confining pressure. For a laboratory confining pressure less than the in situ confining pressure, the cyclic undrained triaxial strength was four~ to increase considerably with decrease in confining pressure.

OF ROCK MASS VIS-A-VIS APPLICATION OF ROCK BOLTING - MOI~TX.ING OF INDIAN COAL MEASURES Ghose, A K; RaJu, N M Proc 22nd US Symposium on Rock Mechanics, Cambridge, Mass, 29 June-2 July 19@l, P422-4ZT. Publ Cambridge, Mass: MIT, 1981

Presents a rock mass classification system to l~ovide guidelines for l~elimingry support design in bord and pillar miniDg, based on studies of Imdian case records of rock bolting and/or roof truss application. The recommendations are valid for roadways of maximum span ~.Sm a~d working depths up to 70Ore, and the scheme has been four~ to be effective.
