Preface Special Issue on Biocomposites

I am happy to have been given the opportunity to edit a special issue on biocomposites, which enables us to highlight this important area of research. The research on biocomposites and biobased nanocomposites is currently very popular, which is evidenced by the numerous research activities all over the world, the many discussion forums and the large number of research publications. The main reason for this popularity is our commitment to creating a more sustainable society by developing new materials and composites based on renewable resources. In this special issue established researchers were invited to submit reviews or their latest research studies. In addition, it has been open to submissions from other researchers covering the subject. Contributors focused on manufacturing, structure property relations including toughening, mechanical properties and thermal properties of biocomposites and biobased nanocomposites. Studies on their surface treatments and final products have also been included. After a rigorous review process the final content is a

compilation of twenty articles, reflecting the current state of research development. This issue consists of four review articles; two of which deal with the processing of cellulose nanocomposites, including in-situ polymerization, and the most common processing methods such as casting, extrusion and resin impregnation. There is an excellent review about natural fiber composites and another showing the many interesting products designed from natural fiber composites. As editor of this special issue, I am grateful to all the authors and reviewers, who have contributed to its publication. I should also like to thank the technical support team at Elsevier for their assistance in preparing this special issue. Finally, I hope this special issue will be an inspiration for our readers and lead to new research ideas, projects and publications. Biocomposite Editor Kristiina Oksman
