Preface to the 12th ILAS Conference Proceedings, Regina 2005

This special issue of Linear Algebra and its Applications contains papers presented at the 12th Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society, which was held June 26–29, 2005 in Regina, Canada. The conference attracted 150 participants, from across 23 countries and five continents. Invited talks were given by Orly Alter (LAA Lecturer), Avi Berman, James Demmel, Dragomir Djokovic, Anne Greenbaum, Olga Holtz, Ilse Ipsen, Charles Johnson, Adrian Lewis, Raphael Leowy, Ren-Cang Li, Chi-Kwong Li (LAMA Lecturer), Joao Queiro, Peter Rowlinson, Bryan Shader, Anna Sierpinska, Christiane Tretter, Richard Varga (Hans Schneider Prize speaker), Pei Yuan Wu and Xingzhi Zhan. In addition to the invited lectures, the scientific program included the following invited minisymposia: Spectral Properties of Families of Matrices Described by Patterns or Graphs (organized by Leslie Hogben), Isospectral and Structure Preserving Transformations (organized by Graham Gladwell and Peter Lancaster), Education Issues in Linear Algebra (organized by Jane Day), Canonical Angles Between Subspaces: Theory and Applications (organized by Li Qiu), and Preserver Problems (organized by Chi-Kwong Li and Peter Semrl). The conference also included more than seventy contributed talks. The scientific organizing committee consisted of Rajendra Bhatia, Robert Guralnick, Daniel Hershkowitz (ILAS President), Steve Kirkland (chair), Volker Mehrmann, Bit-Shun Tam, Pauline van den Driessche and Henry Wolkowicz. The local organizing committee included Shaun Fallat, Doug Farenick, Chun-Hua Guo and Steve Kirkland. The conference was sponsored by Atlas Conference Services, the Canadian Mathematical Society Student Committee, Elsevier, the Fields Institute, ILAS, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, Taylor & Francis, and the University of Regina. The scientific content of the 12th ILAS Conference served to illustrate the depth and diversity of contemporary research in linear algebra. The talks covered a wide array of research areas, discussing matrix theory and linear algebra from algebraic, applied, analytic, combinatorial, geometric and numerical perspectives. The editors of this special issue hope that the papers contained herein, which were refereed according to the usual standards of LAA, will serve not only as a lasting record of the research presented at the conference, but also as a source of information and inspiration for future research. 0024-3795/$ - see front matter ( 2006 Elsevier Inc.
