Silver ions form with neutral ‘‘linear’’ ligands oligomeric complexes in solution, from which a number of 1D-chain solid state structures are obtained which afford polymorphism and pseudo-polymorphism, as well as isomerism.
This review gives an account of the coordination polymers of ligands containing the sulphur-based dithiocarbamate (dtc), dithiocarboxylate and xanthate functional groups.

Two coordination polymers reveal notable structural disparities, which are obviously due to the different monocarboxylato groups (acetato for 1 and propionato for 2) and anions exhibiting a 1D zig–zag polymeric chain and 2D network, respectively. Both compounds are further stabilized by p–p interactions and by H-bonds to form 3D frameworks. Their thermal stability, potential cation-exchange and selected catalytic properties have been investigated.
Four cobalt complexes constructed from a butterfly-shaped tetracarboxylic acid represent various dimensions and topologies, providing a study between coordination modes and dihedral angles, and complex 4 is an example of weak ferromagnetic compounds.
The metal ion is the most important factor that influences assembly of transition metal-benzene dicarboxylic acid coordination polymers.

A series of molecular and extended (chain, layered and pillared layer) compounds of the copper(II)/organonitrogen ligand/xylyldiphosphonate family has been prepared by hydrothermal methods. The structures of the molecular cluster [Cu2(tpyprz)(1,2HO3PC8H8PO3H)2] (11) and of the tetranuclear [Cu4Cl4(tpyprz)2(1,4-H2O3PC8H8PO3H)2]2) cluster anion of 12 are shown.

Hydrothermal reaction of a metal nitrate salt, homophthalic acid, and a long-spanning dipyridyl ligand bearing a central piperazine moiety afforded three new divalent metal homophthalate coordination polymers with different dimensionalities. [Ni(hmph)(4-bpfp)(H2O)]n has a gridlike structure with ferromagnetic coupling along [Ni(OCO)]n chains.
Eight new coordination compounds based on reduced Schiff base tetrazamacrocycle ligand have been prepared. These compounds show fascinating 1D, 2D and 3D supramolecular structures. Compound 1 shows the existence of an antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu(II) ions. Compounds 3–7 display intense emissions.
Effect of auxiliary ligands on the topology of network is illustrated in two Cu(II) complexes with a linear rigid dicarboxylate spacer in presence of two different auxiliary ligands. Chelating ligand furnished a 1D coordination polymer with extensive hydrogen bonding to form 3D hydrogenbonded supramolecular architectures, whereas linear spacer ligand exhibits threefold interpenetrated 3D coordination polymer with CdSO4 topology (cds net).
The reaction of either 4,40 ,6,60 -tetramethyl2,20 -bipyridine or 4,40 ,6,60 -tetracarboxy2,20 -bipyridine with Cu(II) under acidic hydrothermal conditions led to the formation of {[Cu(HL0 )(H2O)]ÆH2O}, 1, which was structurally characterised to identify H3L0 as 4,40 ,6-tricarboxy-2,20 -bipyridine. The structure of 1 consists of a 1D coordination polymer that cross-links through hydrogen-bonding to form an intricately bonded 3D network.

A series of seven silver(I) nitrate complexes containing new ligands (HL1–HL7) each composed of a functionalized phenyl nucleus bearing a terminal ethynyl substituent has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The coordination preferences of the ethynide ligand with respect to the cyano-substituent at variable positions proved to be dominant factors in directing the construction of multi-dimensional organosilver(I) networks, which are consolidated by weak intermolecular interactions in supramolecular assembly.
The nucleophilic addition of methanol and ethanol to dicyanonitrosomethanide, followed by addition of 4,40 -bipyridine, leads to the formation of 1D coordination polymers or dinuclear complexes. Hydrogen bonding interactions between chains in the Zn complex leads to three interpenetrating networks with bsn topology.
Eight new [AuCl2(CN)2])-based materials were synthesized and structurally characterized. Four show ionic or molecular structures, whereas the other four are coordination polymers. Co(OH2)4[AuCl2(CN)2]2Æ2H2O represents the first coordination polymer containing [AuCl2(CN)2]) as a bridging moiety. In one case, a rare AuI AuIII interaction of 3.4530(10) Å was observed.
Luminescent cadmium camphorate coordination polymers with isomeric dipyridylamide ligands show different dimensionality and chirality depending on the specific isomer used during hydrothermal synthesis.

Notes Wei Guo, Albert Escuer, Min Tang, Cheng-Hui Jiang, Miao Du Inorganica Chimica Acta 403 (2013) 142 Ligand-to-metal ratio dependent assembly of two distinct 1D and 3D copper(II)dicyanamide magnetic coordination polymers with a tripyridyltriazole co-tecton
Two distinct 1D and 3D Cu(II) coordination polymers can be assembled based on dicyanamide anion and a tripyridyltriazole tecton, through simply adjusting the ligand-to-metal ratios, in both of which weak antiferromagnetic interactions are observed between the metal ions.
