The 142nd Annual Meeting & Exposition of the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) is right around the comer. The educational programming developed for the APhA 1995 Annual Meeting addresses day-today practice issues and provides you with tools to deliver patient-centered pharmacy services in any practice setting. Each educational session has been designed to focus on those areas you are most interested in learning more aboutcommunication strategies, pharmaceutical care skills, drug therapy management, emerging professional practice issues, interdisciplinary relationship building, and outcomes management. Here are a few highlights: • Communication. Several programs will help you improve your communication skills, to better instruct and counsel patients and caregivers. tating Consultation: Focus on OTCs," "Continuity of Care: From Hospital to Community Phannacy," "Bolstering Your Communication Effectiveness," and "A Matter of Trust: A Program in Pharmacist/ Patient Relationships." • Pharmaceutical Care Skills. To teach the skills to make pharmaceutical care a reality in daily practice, a series of programs have been designed to instruct pharmacists on fundamental pharmaceutical care skills. The Patient Assessment and Monitoring series, a group of programs that focuses on patient management strategies, includes "Compliance Monitoring and Screening," "Developing Pharmaceutical Care Plans," "Role of Physical Assessment in the Delivery of Pharmaceutical Care," "Evaluating & Monitoring Patient Drug Therapies," and "Designing a Documentation System for Pharmacy Practice." In addition, the highly successful Value Added Services series continues with six sessions that discuss reorienting pharmacy practice to provide comprehensive drug therapy management: "Understanding the CARE in Pharmaceutical Care," "Managing Drug

Interactions for Optimal Therapeutic Outcomes," "Systematic Approach to Identifying & Solving Medication Therapy Problems," "Building Relationships with Physicians: Enhancing Pharmaceutical Care," "Counseling Techniques: Integrating Assessment and Intervention," and "Acquiring Necessary Patient Information: Establishing a Pharmaceutical Care Database." • Case Studies. Learn how to integrate comprehensive pharmaceutical care into your practice by attending the two "Phannaceutical Care Showcase" programs. Eight pharmacists will explain, in practical, real-life terms, their patient-centered approach to care. They will describe their practices, discuss how they went about changing their approaches to patient care, and deftne their roles and the results they have achieved. The presenters will provide you with practical information you can put to work right away. In addition, the eight innovative phannacist presenters will be available in the Exposition Hall at the APhA Foundation Booth, #1032, providing an excellent opportunity for face-toface consultation and for reviewing materials from

their practices. Additional programs that will assist are: "Fine-Tuning Workflow for Pharmaceutical Care: Pharmacists, Technicians, and Technology," "Understanding Your Ethical & Legal Responsibilities in Pharmaceutical Care Delivery," and "Critical Thinking & Problem Solving." • Symposium for Scientists and Practitioners. Building on the success of previously held science sym· posia, a special immunology symposium has been planned. "Advances in Immunology: A Symposium for Scientists and Practitioflers" is a day-and-a-half educa· tional program providing a broad overview of immunology and the clinical use of conventional drug therapy, biotechnology drugs, and cells that modulate the immune response. • Cutting-Edge Programmingo APhA will offer a variety of networking opportunities at the Annual Meeting. Don't miss the "Pharmaceutical Care Networking Reception," where you will meet pharmacists who have similar interests and can learn tips and techniques for overcoming baniers to patient-centered care.
