Sfundurds for life-saving devices Nationally accepted standards for such life-saving and life-restoring devices as heart pacemakers, defibrillators, intravenous catheters, and implanted prosthetic devices may result from the efforts of the Medical Devices Technical Advisory Board now functioning under the auspices of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The recently formed board will manage and coordinate standards activities for medical devices. It has invited all organizations with an interest in standards for the safety and performance of medical devices to bring these interests to the board‘s attention for implementation. The increased use and rapid development of implanted and other medical devices has intensified the need for safety and performance standards in this field. Development of appropriate standards has been slow, and efforts i n the past often have been duplicative and uncoordinated. Legislation for expanded federal regulation of medical devices now pending in Congress may require the development of hundreds of standards. The board’s function i s to coordinate the development of standards for medical devices including, but not restricted to, devices used in or related to cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, dentistry, anesthesiology, thoracic surgery, respiratory function, and biological analysis as well as other devices connected with medical or biological

treatment, monitoring, or diagnosis. Acting as a management team for existing or proposed standards, the board will not write or approve standards, but will channel them to appropriate sponsors or to American National Standards committees for development. While standards are under development, the board will monitor their progress. After standards have been approved as American National Standards b y ANSI’s Board of Standards Review, the Medical Devices Technical Advisory Board will continue to review existing standards and coordinate requests for revision or for the development of new standards. The board has formed three stan’ding committees. The New Standards Activities Committee will receive requests and recommendations for new standards and arrange for suitable organizations to sponsor development of such standards. The Ongoing Standards Committee will monitor standards under development, those already published, and those to b e reviewed and updated. The International Liaison Committee will coordinate domestic medical device standards activities with those in other countries. Sfundurds for life-saving devices Nationally accepted standards for such life-saving and life-restoring devices as heart pacemakers, defibrillators, intravenous catheters, and implanted prosthetic devices may result from the efforts of the Medical Devices Technical Advisory Board now functioning under the auspices of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The recently formed board will manage and coordinate standards activities for medical devices. It has invited all organizations with an interest in standards for the safety and performance of medical devices to bring these interests to the board‘s attention for implementation. The increased use and rapid development of implanted and other medical devices has intensified the need for safety and performance standards in this field. Development of appropriate standards has been slow, and efforts i n the past often have been duplicative and uncoordinated. Legislation for expanded federal regulation of medical devices now pending in Congress may require the development of hundreds of standards. The board’s function i s to coordinate the development of standards for medical devices including, but not restricted to, devices used in or related to cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, dentistry, anesthesiology, thoracic surgery, respiratory function, and biological analysis as well as other devices connected with medical or biological

treatment, monitoring, or diagnosis. Acting as a management team for existing or proposed standards, the board will not write or approve standards, but will channel them to appropriate sponsors or to American National Standards committees for development. While standards are under development, the board will monitor their progress. After standards have been approved as American National Standards b y ANSI’s Board of Standards Review, the Medical Devices Technical Advisory Board will continue to review existing standards and coordinate requests for revision or for the development of new standards. The board has formed three stan’ding committees. The New Standards Activities Committee will receive requests and recommendations for new standards and arrange for suitable organizations to sponsor development of such standards. The Ongoing Standards Committee will monitor standards under development, those already published, and those to b e reviewed and updated. The International Liaison Committee will coordinate domestic medical device standards activities with those in other countries.
