GENERAL INFORMATION

RECIPIENTS NAMED FOR 2003 HOLT LEADERSHIP AWARD The attributes required of the emerging leaders in our specialty are honesty, integrity, fairness, advocacy, and enthusiasm, all exemplified by former Academy President and Executive Vice President G. Richard Holt, MD. Accordingly, the Section for Residents and Fellows Holt Leadership Award was established to acknowledge the residents and/or fellows who have demonstrated the necessary qualities to guide the specialty into the 21st century. The 2003 recipients of the Holt Leadership Award are Robert Puchalski MD and Liana Puscas MD. Author, advocate, analyst are all titles that can be added to the resume of Dr. Robert Puchalski, now a private practitioner in Pennsylvania. He attained his medical degree at the Washington University in St. Louis 1997 and completed his residency in otolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. During medical school, he received the AMA/ GLAXO Leadership Award, and participated in a wide range of activities in the Missouri State Medical Society. While an otolaryngology resident Dr. Puchalski was a member of the AAO-HNS Board of Directors, assumed leadership roles in the Residents and Fellows Section, and continued his participation with the AMA. He is a published author of many articles regarding healthcare policy and socioeconomic issues. He has been lauded by his fellow residents for his stellar work on behalf of the specialty’s residents and fellows, particularly for

his role in the development of the Section’s by-laws. Dr. Puchalski is a board-certified otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeon. Upon completion of her medical degree in 1996, Dr. Liana Puscas embarked on a solid record of achievement through her participation within the Academy, the American Medical Association, and the California Medical Association. She is a 1993 graduate of the University of Miami School of Medicine, completed her otolaryngology residency at the University of Southern California in 2001, and this year, entered a Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic, Skull Base and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of California-Davis. Dr. Pucas is a founding member of the AAO-HNS Section for Residents and Fellows and chaired its Policy Committee for the last two years. Prior to her AAOHNS leadership she was a delegate with the AMA House of Delegates and a member of the organization’s Resident and Fellow Section Governing Council. Dr. Pucas has not limited her advocacy efforts to national issues; she was active as a delegate representing the California Medical Association before the AMA. Dr. Pucas is a board certified otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeon. Both Drs. Puchalski and Pucas continue to dedicate their time and energy for the betterment of their specialty and the medical profession.
